Rattler another year in the Garnet and Black
Jan. 10, 2023

The 1-2 passing punch for Carolina is now set to return for the 2023 season with the announcement Tuesday night by quarterback Spencer Rattler that he’ll be back for a second season in the Garnet and Black. His announcement followed that from Monday by receiver Antwane Wells that he will be back in Columbia for this season.

That’s great news for Gamecock fans and distressing news for secondaries around the SEC. Wells caught 68 passes this past season, most, if not all, from Rattler. The pair developed into one of the most dangerous passing combinations in the country.

The one-time five-star recruit had an up-and-down career during his time in Norman, heading into the 2021 season as a perceived Heisman Trophy Candidate before being benched in favor of Caleb Williams. Rattler left Oklahoma in search of a fresh start, eventually landing at USC with former Sooners assistant Shane Beamer.

This year, Rattler flashed during wins over Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt, but still struggled in spurts. The Arizona native then regained his elite form over the final two games of the season, helping South Carolina to upset wins over No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Clemson.

Rattler, after a slow start that saw him throw 7 interceptions to 5 touchdown passes in his first 5 games, turned things around over the final two months of the season with a 14 to 5 touchdown to interception ratio. Rattler finished the season completing over 66% of his passes for 3012 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 3 touchdowns.

For his career at Oklahoma and Carolina, Rattler has thrown for 7607 yards, 58 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions while completing 68.4% of his attempts.

Rattler completed 54 of 75 passes (72%) for 792 yards, eight touchdowns, and just two interceptions in those two games. “Had some pressure, and we’ve got to help (Rattler) with some of the throws in the second half, but he’s a heck of a football player that continued to get better as the season went on,” Beamer said following the Gator Bowl loss to Notre Dame. “Certainly was a catalyst to us having the success that we had throughout the season, as well.”
