There were 750 girls at Camp Mystic this week. A 20-foot wall of water from 4-6:00 am while most folks were sleeping. Those poor folks in Texas didn't stand a chance. The death toll is going to be awful.
what i read some of the local texas officials complain about was that the alerts were calling for half as much rain as they got. the other problem was did noone have phones or did the adults not take the warning as serious as they should with a prior plan to evacuate. then there were flood alarms along the river but not near the camp. heartbreaking, all those kids gone.
There were other camps in the area that took the initiative and moved their kids to higher ground despite not being ordered to. The speed with which the flood surge happened would have made it difficult to get people out in time even during the daylight hours.
It's always easy to second guess these things after the fact. Camp should have know they were in a flood plain, and had plans to evacuate if / when flood warnings come through. Also hearing that there were plans for a storm water / flooding siren /warning system that was not implemented because of costs. None of that will bring these victims back. But hopefully some valuable lessons learned for the future. - the hard way.
