The Gamecocks picked up a commitment from the junior college ranks on Friday. Los Angeles Valley College defensive end Alfy Hill will sign with South Carolina as part of the 2013 recruiting class.

Hill originally signed with Alabama out of West Brunswick High School in Shallotte, N.C. in February 2010, but he was denied admission. He briefly enrolled at East Carolina before going the junior college route.

The 6'4", 255-pounder is known for his speed and athleticism off the edge, and is rated as a 4-star prospect, according to 247sports.com. Hill will be a nice complement to fellow defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The two players will both be juniors when Hill takes the field in 2013.

USC reportedly loses Alfy Hill from commitments

01/09/13

USC DE commitment Alfy Hill reportedly is going to go instead to UNC Pembroke after visiting there earlier this month. Hill attends Los Angeles Valley JC and is a native of Shallotte, NC. The Robesonian.com website, citing sources, reported Hill is headed to Pembroke after stops at Alabama, East Carolina, a junior college in Mississippi and the JC in California. Hill started at defensive end and linebacker this season before suffering a knee injury that ended his season. His departure leaves USC with 19 commitments for the 2013 class.

Academics preventing Hill from joining USC

For the second time, academic issues are keeping DE Alfy Hill of Shallotte, NC from joining a SEC program. Hill's former coach at West Brunswick High School said Thursday his fall semester grade report was not good enough for him to transfer to USC. "It's basically his GPA," Jimmy Fletcher said. Hill attended Los Angeles Valley JC last year but will take classes at a community college near his North Carolina home this semester. Fletcher said there was no reason for Hill to return to the JC because he could not improve his situation enough there to quality for a Division One scholarship. Fletcher confirmed that Hill plans to enroll at Division Two UNC -Pembroke in the fall. He did say USC recruiter Brad Lawing is still exploring what, if any, options remain for Hill and USC, so the door has not been totally closed. Hill signed with Alabama as a high school senior and actually enrolled there and took classes before the NCAA ruled him ineligible. He then enrolled briefly at East Carolina and then later a junior college in Mississippi before heading west.

Door to USC now closed for Hill

01/12/13

What little chance there was for DE Alfy Hill to make it to USC has been exhausted a source said Friday night. Hill was a USC commitment from North Carolina who was attending a junior college in Los Angeles. But his semester grades came up short of qualifying for a Division One scholarship. He's enrolled at a community college near his home in Shallotte, NC with plans on attending UNC Pembroke, a Division Two school. USC continued to work on the situation to see if there was an avenue for Hill to get to Columbia but that came up empty.
