Looks good so far.
WR Jayden Gibson, Oklahoma (Jan. 4)
DT Jordan Thomas, Georgia (Jan. 6)
OL Carter Miller, UCF (Jan. 6)
OL Hank Purvis, Purdue (Jan. 6)

I still feel we could use 1 or 2 more OL. I also think we need 1 or 2 more of the following, RB, and TE. Maybe another DB and WR.
But I really think these 4 may all be good contributors.

With these 2 OL and the 2 new recruits, we may be okay. It will be up to Coach Clements to get them and those returning developed into the kind of OL we need.

We need 2 more OL and possibly another DL. An RB and a TE would be great. A big time true 1 WR would be awesome but I understand their hesitancy given our QB play and not knowing what the new OC will run. Gibson is a question mark right now now but I hope he can be fully healthy and a contributor.

I was looking at some other talk about it; when a player enters the portal, they give up their Scholarship and any NIL money they may be already getting.
If they decide they want to stay, it is up to the coach if they will get the scholarship back. That makes me wonder why so many would even hit the portal without some kind of offer in advance.
Maybe I just missed it, have you ever heard of a player staying after they got in the portal? With thousands getting in the portal, how many of those turned out to be bad choices? I could be wrong but do every one of them find new teams?

Players do sometimes choose to stay at their current school. Coaches let them stay. Players also don’t get picked back up by anyone and lose out completely. It’s a risk for those borderline backups for sure.

We’re still basically bottom feeding in the portal. Hopefully something is in the works to get some better players to transfer in. Still early and there’s plenty there that haven’t committed elsewhere. I fear that we’re over paying the QB and DE position to try and save face because the optics of losing either or both would have been far worse than reality. Certainly hope I’m wrong.

In basketball, Cam Scott entered the portal after last year, but came back.

I think 247Sports has an option on their portal tracker to search for players that have withdrawn from the portal.

The higher profile guys definitely have an agent or someone working on their behalf to secure an offer before even entering the portal. I would guess that most entrants from a power conference school will find a new school. May not be another power school, but a G5 or lower school will likely take them. G5 and lower levels are definitely the riskiest.

could be but theres also the reality that we were 4-8, but we're probably also not as desperate for bodies as some programs who had more outgoings or more seniors. we'll see if it picks up or if later we find out they know what theyre doing with the evaluations. last year's portal class sucked mostly on offense. was that bad coaching or bad evals, probably a good combination of both.

i like the wr as an upside guy even though he hasnt played in two years. the oline is something we're not going to be convinced of til we see it in action no matter who we bring in especially in regards to rankings. last year there was a drop in talent/production from just about every position group. as much as i wont panic, we need experienced all sec eventual nfl talent. two years ago we lost alot of it. there isnt a huge production hole to fill on offense but thats mostly because we didnt do a good job of filling what we lost in experience and production from the interior oline, rocket sanders and josh simon last year.

defensively i thought we were solid last year but its time to get back to the standard of the 2024 defense. 2024 6th in the nation in sacks per game, 2025 97th. 28th in tackles for loss to 73rd. 21st in pass efficiency defense to 42nd. 36 tackles for loss from the linebackers/secondary in 2024 to 20 last year. ideally we bring in an elite edge rusher opposite of stewart but even if we do especially bringing back all the linebackers i want to see us have a 3-3 package like we had at the end of 2023. we ran it for one series against lsu in 2024 they scored and we essentially abandoned it the rest of the year because why go 3-3 when you have kennard and stewart but i think its time for it to make a return as another thing to throw it offenses.

I think I read where we should have somewhere near 21 spots from graduation, exhausted eligibility, and transfers. We’ve filled 4.

I see we are in the running for the #6 ranked portal player. The #1 ranked OL.
Jacarrious Peak, 6-5 310# OT from NC St.
They show us 38% and Ala. 33%. I sure hope Beamer and Clements can pull that one in.

the kicker transferred from buffalo to texas tech last year and wasnt their primary kicker, but he did go 6-6 on his fg attempts all under 40 yards. at buffalo he went 18-21 and 1-2 from 50+ with a long of 52. he played under our former special teams coordinator pete lembo in 2024. he didnt have a high touchback percentage but no way for me to tell if that was by design or not. positives are he has been accurate and he has made at least one 50 yarder in his career. we havent made a 50 yarder the last two years.

i wonder if that 21 number is with the 105 scholarships. there are certain spots where we need bodies but i think theyre hopeful the wr and dt could turn into difference makers. since the portal's inception we have brought in less players every year than who portaled out. 21 currently outgoing, 5 incoming.

SC adds DB Quay'sheed Scott from Kentucky. As a sophomore last year, he played primarily as a nickel and had 3 tackles and an interception.

Apparently, he had a visit scheduled with Alabama for after our visit, but the rumor is he cancelled it. This is hopefully looking good.

247 doesnt have db quay scott rated for some reason, on3 ranks him no.8 cb, 91.76 rating and a 4 star. 247 ranks jacarrius peak as the no.3 ot and a 94 rating 4 star, on3 ranks him no.1 ot and a 98 rating and a 5 star. upton bellenfant on3 ranks no.4 kicker in the portal.

on3 has our portal class 21st with the 7 incomings.
