Feb. 06, 2017
South Carolina’s Top 25 class in 2017 was obviously a team effort by the USC coaching staff, but wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon drew praise from Rivals.com as a Top 25 recruiter.
McClendon, coming off his first season at South Carolina, was credited with helping secure a handful of key commitments in the first full recruiting class in Will Muschamp’s tenure as the head coach at South Carolina.
“The former Georgia assistant has always handled the city of Atlanta, and he had success once again in the 2017 class,” Rivals said. “He played a major role in helping land four-star defensive lineman Aaron Sterling on National Signing Day and also helped nab early enrollee defensive tackle MJ Webb. He also helped assist on the Gamecocks’ impressive wide receiver haul of OrTre Smith, Shi Smith and Chad Terrell, all Rivals250 prospects.”
McClendon recently received a raise heading into the 2017 season, as well as a contract extension.
The Gamecocks played a handful of young receivers in McClendon’s first season. Sophomore Deebo Samuel led the team with 59 catches for 783 yards with a touchdown. Freshman Bryan Edwards made a big mark with 44 catches for 590 yards and 4 touchdowns. True freshmen Korey Banks, Chavis Dawkins and Randrecous Davis also all saw playing time.
247sports rated South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson as the Gamecocks’ top recruiter and the No. 56 overall recruiter in the nation. McClendon checked in at No. 72, with defensive line coach Lance Thompson just behind at No. 77.
247sports credited McClendon as the primary recruiter on Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando wide receiver OrTre Smith, Dallas (Ga.) North Paulding wide receiver Chad Terrell and Fairburn (Ga.) Creekside offensive tackle Jordan Rhodes. He also was credited as being the secondary recruiter for Grayson (Ga.) defensive back Jamyest Williams and Union (S.C.) wide receiver Shi Smith.
