South Carolina Football: Three things the Gamecocks need to do against Coastal

South Carolina opens up the 2018 season against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Although this won't be as competitive of a game as the Georgia game will be, this gives coach Muschamp some time to experiment in live game situations.

South Carolina faces Coastal Carolina Saturday in the season opener at Williams-Brice Stadium. This should be an easy one for the Gamecocks especially since they are favored by 29.5 points. This should also give Muschamp and his staff an opportunity to try new things and see how they work. However, I would like to see three specific things in this game.

Cover the spread

I would like to see South Carolina cover the spread. Last time South Carolina faced the Chanticleers, the Gamecocks won 70-10. This game was in 2013, which was arguably the best season in program history. If the Gamecocks want to prove that they are national contenders, they have to dominate their FCS opponents. This could also put South Carolina in the top 25 heading into the Georgia game.

Three passing touchdowns

I would also like to see QB Jake Bentley throw three touchdowns. While it might be a long shot, if Bentley is able to get hot in this game, he can have a lot of confidence going into one of the biggest games of the season. He can easily throw three touchdowns with the weapons at wide receiver. However, I doubt Muschamp will keep Bentley on the field for the whole first half. I expect to see back-ups Michael Scarnecchia and Jay Urich handle most of the game while Dakereon Joyner will enter every now and then for an option play.

Three forced turnovers

I would also like to see at least three forced turnovers. South Carolina’s defense wasn’t perfect last year, but they led the SEC in takeaways, which was a huge part of what made this team win nine games last season. If the Gamecocks want to prove that they can be a top defense again, they need to take advantage of this game and force at least three turnovers.

The Gamecocks should win this one, but if they really want to prove that they can compete in the East, they have to be able to breeze past FCS competition like the elite teams do. Although these three things are a long shot, they could happen depending on how much they want to crack into the Top 25.
