Gamecocks Play in Regional Championship Game Sunday Night
– The Gamecocks will play in the NCAA Columbia Regional championship game Sunday night (June 4) at 6 p.m. Carolina will face either Campbell or North Carolina State at Founders Park.
– The Gamecocks used a third-inning Braylen Wimmer home run, four runs in the fifth frame, solid pitching from three arms and stellar defense in their 6-3 win over North Carolina State on Saturday night (June 3).
– Carolina advances to the regional championship game for the first time since 2018 and the first time at Founders Park since 2016.
– Carolina is one of four SEC schools to advance to the regional championships with two more playing for that right (LSU and Arkansas) after postponments yesterday. Carolina, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Alabama all will play tonight.
– Wimmer belted his 13th home run of the season in the third inning against NC State. It was his 31st home run of his career, which puts him in a tie for 20th in Carolina history.
– Jack Mahoney picked up his seventh win of the season, striking out six in six innings of work. Mahoney now has 80 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched.
– Chris Veach recorded his sixth save of the season, inducing a groundout and flyout to end the game. Veach is fourth in the SEC with six saves.
– Carolina scored all of its runs with two out on Saturday, including four in the fifth. Four straight walks led to a Talmadge LeCroy RBI. Gavin Casas then singled in a pair and Michael Braswell brought in one with back-to-back singles.
– Carolina moved to 139-71 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
– Carolina is hitting .329 in the regional and has a .505 on-base percentage due to 23 walks.
– Carolina is 11-2 all-time against Campbell, having played them in the 2014 Columbia Regional.
– Carolina is now 1-2 all-time against NC State in NCAA Tournament play. The Gamecocks lost a pair to the Wolfpack in the 2008 Raleigh Regional.
