GCF  South Carolina vs. Missouri Game Preview, Prediction & Discussion Thread

Nov. 09, 2021

South Carolina football hits the road for the last time in the 2021 regular season as it travels to face its last SEC East opponent, the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Missouri. The Gamecocks routed Florida following their bye week, sending Dan Mullen’s Gators back to Gainesville with a 40-17 loss and inching within one victory of bowl eligibility in Shane Beamer’s first year as head coach. Missouri returns to Faurot Field after suffering a 43-6 loss to Georgia in Athens last week.

South Carolina could even the series record against Missouri with a win on Saturday, as the Tigers currently hold the matchup with a 6-5 overall record. Mizzou has taken the last two meetings, leaving Williams-Brice Stadium last season with a 17-10 win on Nov. 21, 2020.

HOW TO WATCH SOUTH CAROLINA VS MISSOURI FOOTBALL GAME

Who: South Carolina Gamecocks (5-4, 2-4 SEC) at Missouri Tigers (4-5, 1-4 SEC)

Where: Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium (62,621) in Columbia, MO

When: 4 p.m. Saturday TV: SEC Network

Stream: via ESPN app

The Gamecocks opened a 3-point underdog to Missouri on the road, but the line has moved around in various sportsbooks. Caesars, Circa Sports, SuperBook and the VegasInsider Consensus lowered the line to 1 point in favor of Missouri, while South Carolina was actually favored by 1.5 points according to DraftKings.

 THE GAMECOCKS

South Carolina is coming off of a statement win in the first year of the Beamer era, defeating Florida handily 40-17 at Williams-Brice Stadium. It appears the off week between the Texas A&M thrashing (44-14 loss in College Station) and the Florida victory did wonders for the Gamecocks’ offensive progression, as Jason Brown took the reins at quarterback and led the way to South Carolina’s most productive week in total offense (459 yards) and rushing yards (284).

Pair that performance with a season-best effort with rush defense, limited a typically prolific Florida ground game to 82 yards on 26 attempts, another positive day in the turnover battle (recovered fumble for a touchdown and an interception) and just a single penalty for the day, and the Gamecocks could be peaking late. South Carolina needs just one more win in its final three games —against either Missouri, Auburn or Clemson  to make it to a bowl game in Beamer’s first season.

SOUTH CAROILNA PLAYERS TO WATCH

QB Jason Brown: Brown finished his first start as a Gamecock 14 of 24 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. His 50-yard pass to Josh Vann in the second quarter gave the Gamecock offense life. His 24-yard touchdown pass to Vann three plays later then pushed South Carolina’s lead to 10. It wasn’t an all-world performance by any stretch. Brown missed a few throws and just overshot Vann and Dakereon Joyner on would-be big plays. But for a third-string quarterback who just last year was at FCS St. Francis (Pennsylvania), Saturday went as well as Brown, Beamer and the Gamecocks staff could’ve hoped for.

WR Josh Vann: Vann exploded onto the scene with 127 yards against East Carolina and 128 yards at Georgia in South Carolina’s first two games against FBS competition this year. Since then, Vann hadn’t gone for more than 45 yards or three catches in a contest. Until Saturday. Facing a Florida defense that has been susceptible at times this season, Vann recorded 111 yards on seven catches to lead the team in both categories. He also narrowly missed on another big gain when a pass from Brown drifted just far enough out of bounds that he couldn’t get a foot down. South Carolina’s offense had come to a complete stop without Vann involved of late. With Brown taking a few more shots downfield and Vann’s ability to beat defensive backs one-on-one, USC has a recipe for more points over its final three games.

RB Kevin Harris: Harris encore to a 2020 campaign in which he led the SEC in rushing has been a disappointment just about any way you slice it. Saturday, though, the Harris of old returned. He finished his night with 128 yards on just 11 attempts, more than doubling his season-high rushing output for any game this fall. Harris bounced off, bowled over and blew by tacklers with the precision that helped him lead the league in rushing a season ago. His speed still didn’t quite appear to be a top gear, but he’s clearly getting closer. South Carolina’s running game has been a mess this year. If Harris can stay healthy over the last three weeks, USC ought to like its chances down the stretc

 THE MISSOURI TIGERS

The status of Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak is unknown following an injury that saw the Tigers’ sophomore starter miss their last game at Georgia. Second-year head coach Eliah Drinkwitz opted to split time between Bazelak’s two backups, Tyler Macon and Brady Cook, to little avail in a 43-6 defeat by the No. 1 team in the nation.

The Tigers’ offense isn’t exactly prolific, ranked toward the mid tier of the SEC in yards per game, but Missouri’s true struggles have been with its ailing defense, which allows nearly 500 yards per game and sees opponents score 36.8 points on average. Missouri’s rush defense has been especially anemic, ranked at the bottom of the conference allowing 271 yards each week.

The Tigers have only held three of their nine opponents to less than 250 yards on the ground — Central Michigan, North Texas and (ironically) Georgia. Missouri is at the bottom of the SEC East, above just a 2-7 Vanderbilt team, and needs to come up with two wins across games against South Carolina, Florida and Arkansas to reach a bowl berth

 MIZZOU PLAYERS TO WATCH

WR Tauskie Dove: Dove has explosive play potential and has hauled in at least one reception of 10 yards or more in every Missouri game this season. He’s totaled 30 catches for 454 yards this year and averages 15.1 yards per reception, making the 6-foot-2 wideout a formidable matchup for the Gamecocks’ secondary.

DB Jaylon Carlies: Carlies is a turnover machine for the Tigers, coming up with four interceptions and a forced fumble this season. The 6-foot-3 sophomore safety is tied for third in the country in total interceptions (second in the SEC behind South Carolina’s Jaylan Foster) and was one of the lone bright spots in Missouri’s most recent loss at Georgia, intercepting Bulldog quarterback J.T. Daniels and coming up with a team-leading 10 tackles in Athens.

RB Tyler Badie: Badie’s production was stifled in Missouri’s last game against Georgia, but the senior will be looking to replicate the performances he had against Central Michigan (203 yards on 25 carries), North Texas (209 yards on 17 carries) and Vanderbilt (254 yards on 31 carries). Badie has already eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in 2021 and adds another 315 yards on 45 receptions. He’s the 10th most productive rusher in the country and ranks first in the SEC.

GCF PREDICTION

Missouri QB Connor Bazelak is still banged up. He missed the Georgia game, but he practiced this week and might have a shot at playing , but don’t count on him quite yet folks. Even so, Missouri should be able to run well and keep the offense moving. It won’t be enough though. South Carolina Gamecocks' has found it's mojo beating up Florida last week-end at tune of 40-17. The Florida defensive front is a brick wall compared to Missouri’s line. Gamecocks will  use a heavy dose Harris, White,  and Lloyd on the porous Tiger D on the way to a sixth win and bowl eligibility,. Yes you heard me say "bowl eligibility"

South Carolina 24
Mizzou 23

Mizzou's d-line and LBs played much better last weekend against the UGA run game, so I'm not so sure it will be smooth sledding for us there after 1 game of success .... but we are playing with more fire then we have played with in, well, years ... at least we did last weekend. Fingers crossed.

Tigers from the Other Columbia 23

Fighting Damn Gamecocks from the Real Columbia 37

I believe Beamer and staff will have this team ready and focused on this game.  RB's should have a good game.  Brown just needs to continue what he did this past weekend.   I believe he will be even be more focused.   Go Cocks, let's move forward!  We win, no prediction.

also, if we put points on the board in drive after drive the way we did last week, their running game becomes a nonfactor and they are screwed.

This is what I'm thinking. If they struggle to contain our run game as they have struggled with most everyone else, and we can run on them, then we keep their offense off the field, and their poor defense on it, which only further helps our cause.

South Carolina: 31

Missouri: 20

Missouri has averaged 31.6 ppg this season, so this seems kinda low. But they've only averaged 21.8 ppg against conference foes, 21.2 ppg in losses, and only 23.8 ppg versus all FBS Power 5 opponents, so my numbers are not that far off. Vanderbilt scored 28 pts against them, which were the most points vs a SEC foe Vandy has scored this season - beating out the 20 pts they scored against us. Our offense may be terrible, but it's better than Vanderbilt's. Those 28 pts by Vandy were the fewest points scored against Mizzou by an SEC opponent thus far this season....

Win or lose, Mizzou has put up 24+ points on their opponents not named UGA or TAMU this season.  They only lost 35-28 to UK.

We have to win (or not lose) the first half to win this game.  That means our defense will have to do its job most of the game for us to get the victory.

It would be a huge disappointment for me if we allow too many explosive plays in the first half.

Being favored by 3 or less points in this game means nothing because we are still both lower-tier SEC East teams until our performance improves.

Our players should already know what to do at this point in the season.

It seems we are at the point where we are starting to turn things around and the odds for the remaining games mean nothing.

However, I will stick with a 1-point victory by Mizzou in anticipation of being proven wrong on Saturday.  If we rest on our laurels in practice this week, then Mizzou wins by a much larger margin.

Get a few turnovers and 1 defensive score or maybe a special teams score.  I think we can run the ball this Saturday to shorten the game and wear out their D.

Brown on the road will be a true litmus test of what he is. and not saying that to be negative because I am pulling for the guy. But the road is different than at home and both teams are playing for bowl berth. Missou has to win 2 of 3 to become eligible.

This Saturday will show if we've turned the corner or if Florida was a flukes as many say.  I hope it wasn't.  Does the team truly play better with Jason?  Pulling for the guy.  So many questions.  Our O and D need to play lights out EARLY.  We shall see if Florida was the start.  Money line is on us now.  Optimistic as always and glad it's at 4:00.

The heart of the 2121 Gamecocks One game at a time lets see what happens Saturday in the other Columbia.

SOUTH CAROLINA’S OPPORTUNISTIC DEFENSE

South Carolina’s defense is ahead of schedule. Ranked in the middle of the pack in the SEC, that’s a massive step forward for a defense that was torched week in and week out in Will Muschamp’s final season at the helm. Saturday, it was defensive tackle Jabari Ellis who scooped an Emory Jones fumble and took it 18 yards to the end zone to push South Carolina’s halftime lead to three scores.

For all the issues the Gamecocks has had offensively, its defense entered the week leading the SEC in forced turnovers. Ellis’ touchdown also marked the Gamecocks’ fourth defensive score of the season. South Carolina takes on a Missouri team next week that has thrown the fifth-most interceptions in the league this year. If the Gamecocks can again set up the offense for success, Gamecocks' might be bowl-eligible as soon as next Saturday.

WR JOSH VANN

Josh Vann exploded onto the scene with 127 yards against East Carolina and 128 yards at Georgia in South Carolina’s first two games against FBS competition this year. With Brown taking a few more shots downfield and Vann’s ability to beat defensive backs one-on-one, South Carolina has a recipe for more points over its final three games.

JASON BROWN QB

Brown finished his first start as a Gamecock 14 of 24 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Francis (Pennsylvania), Saturday went as well as Brown, Beamer and the South Carolina staff could’ve hoped for.

RB ZAQUANDRE WHITE

Sticking on running backs, ZaQuandre White turned in his second consecutive impressive performance in Saturday’s win over Florida. White, who led all Gamecocks rushers with 59 yards on eight carries at Texas A&M two weeks ago, finished just behind Harris against the Gators, notching 111 yards on just 13 touches. The former Florida State signee has had limited opportunities this fall. Thrice this year he didn’t even record a carry. But with back-to-back dynamic efforts, expect White to get a heavy workload next week at Missouri.

RB KEVIN HARRIS

Kevin Harris’ encore to a 2020 campaign in which he led the SEC in rushing has been a disappointment just about any way you slice it. If Harris can stay healthy over the last three weeks, Gamecocks ought to like its chances down the stretch.

RB MARSHAWN LLOYD

MarShawn Lloyd has been slightly less prolific than we might’ve expected in his first full season in Columbia. Perhaps that’s unfair given Lloyd is coming off a major knee surgery that can take up to two years to find full comfort after. That said, the dynamic second-year tailback looked the part of his top-50 recruiting ranking when he ripped off a 40-yard run in the third quarter of last week’s win over Florida.

Lloyd finished the day with 46 yards on seven carries as he ditched the brace he’d been wearing on his left knee for the first time in a game this season. He’s been mostly relegated to third or fourth fiddle behind Kevin Harris and Juju McDowell. Former Florida State running back ZaQuandre White’s recent emergence crowds the backfield some. If Lloyd can come on strong Saturday and late this season, he sets up another uber talented backfield for Shane Beamer’s second season.

CB DARIUS RUSH

We heard plenty about cornerbacks Cam Smith and transfer Karon Prunty in the preseason. With Prunty not lasting much more than a month in Columbia and Smith having battled injuries, Darius Rush has seen a little more game action than we might’ve expected coming into the fall. Rush has been susceptible in coverage a handful of times  including when he was burned for a deep touchdown at Georgia. However, there have been some bright spots as well. The converted receiver recorded a sack during the win over Florida on Saturday. He also has 17 tackles, and his two pass breakups rank tied for third on the team. Missouri’s defense has been a mess this season, but the Tigers have still managed to put up prolific numbers offensively.

While it’s unclear who might actually start at quarterback for Eli Drinkwitz’s squad, Missouri is still averaging 265.3 passing yards per game  good for fourth in the SEC. The Gamecocks are going to get tested in the secondary regardless of who starts under center for the Tigers. A strong day by Rush would go a long way.

I wrote about the tight ends at length the other day, but Nick Muse had one of his best games of the season against Florida when he recorded four of South Carolina’s 14 receptions on the day. Muse hasn’t quite replicated the form that saw him record 425 yards on 30 catches a season ago, but his blocking has significantly improved amid a muddied tight end room that also includes Jaheim Bell and recent revelation Traevon Kenion.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield echoed Beamer’s sentiments from the summer on Wednesday that USC wants and needs to include its tight ends in the offense going forward. It only stands to help receivers get open on the outside and create mismatches on the inside. Bell has been a monster when called upon this season. His 286 yards are almost double that of anyone else on the roster that’s not named Josh Vann. Throw Muse — who has a track record for making plays in the passing game alongside Bell, and South Carolina can create all sorts of problems for a Missouri defense that’s allowed double as many passing touchdowns as it has recorded interceptions in 2021.

I am so ready for this one to start.  I see it 34-14 gamecocks win. And I think it will be Brown's day. Missou is going to be attacking the line to try and slow down our rush and Brown is going to be throwing some long balls for TDs
