Improve the Gamecocks offensive attack: More deep shots?

Sept. 06, 2019

RB Rico Dowdle the senior tailback has played for two coordinators, one head coach and now four offenses that have had their share of ups and downs, another big downer Saturday against the Tarheels. RB Rico Dowdle not shy, he had a few thoughts about how things might change after the team scored seven points across the final 48 minutes of game time. Starting off with.  “I think we could have ran the ball on the them all game, if you ask me,” Dowdle said. “We didn’t run it as much as we did in the first half.” Through one quarter, the Gamecocks had nine carries for 90 yards. The next 19 non-sack carries netted 58 yards. (VIEW ARTICLE)

I am sure enough deep balls were attempted. None were completed, but they were attempted.

I'm not sure more deep shots are needed, I think more creativity is needed. Get the ball to play makers in space and let them win a one on one.  It's been discussed ad nauseum but the play calling on offense is just repetitive and conservative. I do think part of the problem was they were limiting Jake to very short passes for the most part and in the second half UNC picked up on it and adjusted.

Guys, we need less passing attempts, not more.

A good running game will set up the passing game that we want by keeping defenses honest.

Not sure why people don't get this.

Not sure what the number of passing vs running plays was, but it seems the problem was that they weren't completed, not that they weren't attempted.

with the proven talent and depth, we should at least keep 'em honest with the ground and pound.

Have you seen our sieve? I mean our offensive line.
There were quite a few times that Bentley had several seconds, and never threw the ball.  The OL did screw up plenty, but Bentley held the ball WAY too long.  I didn’t see every play, but several I did see, there were receivers open, and he either didn’t throw, or overthrew them.

We have several problems, it appears, and Hilinski playing will help narrow down where the issues are.  Hopefully CWM will allow McClendon to fix it.

longer pass plays mean great protection and skills from a QB that is in his first test.  Why don't we have quick hitters to the wide-out and put the QB under a lot less upfront pressure ?
