Jake Bentley back next year? The plan for that discussion

Oct. 29, 2019

Coach Will Muschamp said over the weekend that he doesn’t have an inkling of the plans his opening game starting quarterback, Jake Bentley, has for next season. He had no updates on Bentley’s plan there, but he has his own plan as to how he will approach that conversation at some point. (VIEW ARTICLE)

Thank you for your dedication and service to THE University. Good luck and much success to him and his dad at their next location.

I would like to see the two QBs compete against each other and make each other better next year.

So I would like to see Jake stay.

I appreciate Jake very much. He has given the program all he had the last 4 years.

The problem, if he were to come back, is that "he wants to go to the next level." While I don't believe that he is a "next level" quarterback, I have no doubt that, because of this stated desire, he would be named the starter the minute he announced his return. Now, if that happened, Ryan could potentially redshirt his sophomore year since DJ and Doty will be on the roster too (presumably). But what happens the following year when Jake is gone for good? Does Ryan take the start again, or is it an open competition? Tough decisions.

Easiest thing is if Jake does the grad transfer thing at another P5 school (that has an O-line that can protect him).

I have a feeling JB will be back and try to claim his starting role. It might not be a bad thing seeing if we got lucky and JB didnt get hurt again or stink the joint up we could redshirt both Hilinski and Doty. That way we let Hillinski and Doty fight for the starting position in 2021. I will say this, I have seen Doty play several times this year and he too is the real deal. I know it is only HS ball but Doty may bring more to the table than Hillinski. Doty can move and he reads the HS defenses very well. Excited about having him in Columbia.

To me that is the best option.

I don't think Bentley is going anywhere. The coach has shown that he will have cartre blanc at the position if he returns.

I don't see how Bentley would be a shoe in for QB1 next year, unless Ryan sustains an injury. I also don't understand the pure excitement over Doty. HS and college are very different. I've heard those words all too often and not just at SC so I am very cautious when it comes to [insert HS QB recruit name].

If Bentley decides to compete next year, then he should be given the opportunity.

Would love to see him stay and have him and Hilinski battle it out for he starting job and hopefully make both of the elevate their game.

Having a seasoned QB come back is always a good thing for the team, but one of them (Ryan and Jake) or probably both of them won't be happy with their playing time.  Doty needs to RS, much like Ryan would have this year if Jake wasn't hurt.

It all depends on who the OC is. If we stay with the current coaches, we probably need him to stay. If Joyner continues to be used as a runner only, by the end of this year, he'll see the handwriting on the wall. He'll realize that the coaches don't seem to want to or be able to utilize a dual threat QB, and will probably transfer or will not get the reps in the upcoming season. So after they spend the spring trying to turn Doty into a drop back pocket passer, or a wildcat option, we'll be stuck with no QB depth if Jake leaves, If we get a new OC, and we have a real QB competition; then hopefully he will stay, and maybe see him return to the form of his second year.

It's difficult to understand why we haven't been able to utilize a mobile QB, especially since it creates some real advantages for the offensive line. We utilized it to great effectiveness with Connor shaw, and saw it kill us against Florida. If we cannot protect for 3 counts in a well defined pocket, and don't have enough speed to stretch the defense, then get out of the drop back and start moving the pocket, or put in a Joyner and start figuring out what works for the talent we seem to be chasing.

I've always thought that in college football unless you have a blue chip offensive line, you need a mobile quarterback. I like both Jake and Ryan, but right now our offensive line cannot seem to protect them. I'd like to see more from Joyner. I keep reading that he's not a great passer but we haven't really seen him throw enough to support that fact.

It should be a must for us. We need every advantage possible and a coach desperate to win games should wholly embrace this.

The play below is the same zone read we ran with Connor Shaw. This is from last night's game....the first loss for the Pats.
