Jones: 'That's something that probably needed to happen

Sept. 02, 2019

Deep within the bowels of Bank of America Stadium on Saturday night, South Carolina Gamecocks linebacker Ernest Jones offered a sobering take on the 24-20 loss to North Carolina.

“We can’t really dwell on it now, it happened,” he said. “We’re going to learn from it. We’re going to be a great team. We’re going to be a good team.

“That’s something that probably needed to happen.”

Why is that?

“I’m not sure. You’ve got to be – I guess I would say, humbled, sometimes,” Jones said. “That’s all I’ve got.” (VIEW ARTICLE) FREE 247SPORTS

I like the way you think sir. As a 50 yr fan Im always hopeful and surely that was not a good example of the quality talent we have . Here s to better football moving forward. Go Cocks!

Here we go again.  I'm down about Gamecock football, and it's only Monday, and I'm getting reeled in and excited again.

LOL, being set up for another fall?

Not that I think we'll lose to Charleston Southern, but what if we win 56-21 or something?  Then all we'll be talking about is the defense next week as we prep for Alabama.

Even if we were to win 73-0, fans will complain "where was this team against UNC?"

At this point, we just need to  get a win streak going.  Pivotal game of the season remains at Missouri in week 4.  Win that and I think we'll go bowling.

Oh, and expect Jake Bentley to transfer after that week.

I thought Jones played well in his first start. And he might be right about the wake-up call - the attitude on the team was bad. We ran our mouth too much and produced too little on Defense. It was like we believed our own press clippings.

A quick thought. In 2015, we opened with a win over UNC when they seemed to have the better, more experienced team - we had the inexperienced QB (Connor Mitch) while UNC had a multi-year starter Senior QB. We caught a break when the veteran QB threw some dumb INTs into the end zone (thank you Skai Moore), shut out their Offense in the 2nd Half, and pulled out a close one with a 4th Quarter TD. Pretty much the exact opposite of the 2015 game.

We went on to finish 3-9 with a loss to The Citadel, lost our coach, and generally stunk the rest of the year. UNC got motivated, ran the table in their conference, lost a close game to Clemson in the ACC title game (with a questionable call near the end), and finished 11-3.

If Jones is right and the players/staff get the message and go all out - and what do they have to lose at this point? - the same thing can happen for us. We are unbeaten in the SEC right now.
That's been a problem for our men's Big 3 sports the past several years.

We gotta be like Lattimore used to be: quiet confidence that comes from a solid work ethic and discipline.

Bentley won't make a transfer decision until season's end. Remember, he will be a grad transfer and will be immediately eligible, so there is no need to leave now. He will not know who needs an experienced QB until then.

Also, if Hilinski and/or Joyner struggle, then we might be the team that needs an experienced QB. And Benley would still be in position to set the all of the career records.

Another consideration is that a transfer might be seen as a sign of disloyalty to the Gamecocks, which could impact his Dad's job security.

OTOH, if Hilinski and/or Joyner are successful, then Bentley might be encouraged to look elsewhere, with no issues for his Dad. Either way, he needs to wait.
I agree. I doubt he would go anywhere until after the season. But I also expect he would transfer to get a shot to play next year. There are a whole lot of good NFL caliber QB's going to be in the next draft, I think about 9. Might be better for him not to be in that group. Tagovaioloa and Fromm are only JR but may both jump for the money. A redshirt might actually help him. Sure hope he can get over all the INT's.

Great post, I hadn't looked at it like that.

Our players believing their own hype just speaks to how ill prepared the team was. Spurrier always had a knack for sh*t talking his own team, and I guess it kept them hungry. But whatever, moving on....
