South Carolina and LSU are two of the SEC's top three rebounding teams this season. The Gamecocks' 46.0 rpg edges out the Tigers' 44.7, but LSU's .759 defensive rebounding percentage is just ahead of South Carolina's .758. The Gamecocks have the edge on the offensive glass, securing 44.1 percent of their own missed shots compared to LSU's 38.8 percent.

The LSU Series
LSU leads the overall series 22-16, but the Gamecocks have won the last 12 meetings and are 13-5 against the Tigers in the Dawn Staley era. This is the fourth time South Carolina has carried a No. 1 ranking into a game against LSU, including last season's Valentine's Day matchup, which it won by seven (66-59) in Columbia.

The Gamecocks also won their last trip to the Maravich Center, a 69-65 decision on Jan. 24, 2021. The Tigers took a two-point lead into halftime of that game, and the teams tied the third quarter. South Carolina took the lead early in the fourth on a Destanni Henderson 3-pointer and stretched it to nine with just 1:14 left to play. LeLe Grissett poured in all eight of her points in the final period, all on fast breaks. The Tigers persisted, forcing a pair of late turnovers but ran out of time to fully close the gap.

As always, Dawn Staley vs. Kim Mulkey should be a great one.

This will be a tough road game for us.

They're reporting that we're going to be a couple of players short tonight.  Not good.

Amihere and Thompson - who are roommates at USC - were out for the Miss State game, so Cardoso is the new addition. Having 12 players is still a good group, but both Amihere and Cardoso cuts down on our post depth substantially.....

LSU leads 19-13 after the first period. The Tigers opened up hitting on their first 7 shot attempts, and ended up going 9-13 (69%) from the field. That means they went 2-6 after that opening run, so hopefully that means they are coming down from that high, and will shoot more like a normal team from here on out. LSU is the #3 team in the SEC in field goal percentage (46.5%), while USC is the #4 team (44.7%) - they shot 5-14 (35.7%) in the 1st period.

And with my old grind, we're still hard at it - turning the ball over on offense left and right. We're on pace for 28 turnovers for the game......

Boston picks up her 2nd foul off of a blatant Tiger player flop, and we're officially in trouble now. We're in real trouble in the post.....

LSU leads 34-28 at the half. Gamecocks tie LSU in the 2nd period in scoring 15-15, but continue the turnover fest - they have 13 TOs for the 1st half. Sania Feagin plays while Boston was out with foul trouble - she scores no points, and takes no attempts, but pulls down 4 rebounds in 6 minutes, and actually leads the team in that area, so she provided needed production there.

The Tigers did come down from their 1st-quarter shooting explosion, shooting 7-19 (36.8%) for the period, while the Gamecocks shot 6-10 (60.0%). But LSU took twice as many attempts, due to the Gamecocks' 6 TOs in the period, we now have 13 TOs for the game, to only 5 for the Tigers. But we will get Boston back for the 2nd half now, and we seem to have settled things down with the game.

Zia Cooke leads the team with 11 pts on 5-9 shooting, and Victaria Saxton has 6 pts on 3-3 shooting, with 3 rebounds......

South Carolina wins 66-60 over LSU in another typical SEC rock fight. Aliyah Boston led the Gamecocks with 19 pts on 6-13 shooting - 7-10 at the FT line - with 18 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Zia Cooke had 17 pts on 7-15 shooting, and Destanni Henderson added 16 pts on 4-14 shooting, 6-8 from the line. The Gamecocks out-rebounded LSU 48-24 and despite LSU coming out red hot shooting the ball in the 1st Qtr., out-shot the Tigers 22-50 (44.0%) to 28-66 (42.4%).

Last night's game was one of the worst officiated (and that's saying something) women's games I've seen in a while.  Our post players were getting mugged under the basket with no calls yet we were getting touch fouls on the other end.  But you could also argue not fouling us and sending us to the line is an advantage for us.

I thought earlier in the year that we had a good shot at winning it all.  After the last 3 games I'm less confident.  Poor free throw shooting, way too many turnovers, and way too many missed bunnies is likely to doom us in March madness.

Right now, in my humble opinion, continuity is killing us.  We've struggled since Henderson went out with injury, and we had to move Amihere over into being a point guard.  We get Henderson back, and COVID starts affecting our team...again causing rotation and match up issues.  If we can get back to full strength, and playing within the system, we'll be ok.  Knock on wood.

I hope you're right.
