2 SC lawmakers will file proposal to pay college athletes, following California’s lead

Sept. 13, 2019

This week, California’s state legislature became the first one in the United States to pass a controversial proposal allowing college athletes to profit from their fame by earning endorsement money.

Two S.C. Democrats want South Carolina’s Legislature to become the second.

S.C. Sen. Marlon Kimpson, D-Charleston, and Rep. Justin Bamberg, D-Bamberg, told The State Thursday they plan to file a bill similar to California’s SB 206 proposal when the General Assembly reconvenes in January. (VIEW ARTICLE) THE STATE

Pandora box. This is just the beginning.

the term student athlete has always been a crock.  this needs to happen and while i havent seen it discussed in relation to this im thinking this might open the door for a return of college sports video games.

Can of worms.....opens the door for reparations to former "amatuer" athletes via class action suits.

This needs to be handled carefully.

Freaking politicians need to leave my college tackle footzball alone. Pisses me off.

Not opposed to college athletes getting a bigger piece of the pie. there is nothing amature about big time CF or CBB. Everyone gets rich except for the players - Coaches, schools, conferences.

The way to do it is like College Baseball. Let the blue chips go pro or semi-pro straight out of HS. And let college football be for the students that want to go to college.

I'm all for this, I am just saying, you know Clemson had a hand in this, they weren't about to let all the good recruits go to California now were they? Watch Alabama follow suit.

I think the thread title says it all...following California's lead.

That's all the reason one needs to oppose the legislation.

I agree with this, but the minor leagues of college football is very, very slow in coming.

I believe the NCAA has stated that any school who participates in paying it's players will not be eligible for NCAA-sanctioned championships or events.

Could be an easy out for the P5 conferences to start their own thing.
