ABOUT THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES

  • The Gamecocks have just a single game of history against the tournament field. South Carolina topped then-No. 25/21 South Dakota 73-60 on Dec. 22, 2019, at Colonial Life Arena. 
  • South Carolina has played in Sioux Falls once before this weekend, an upset 80-72 loss to then-No. 14 Syracuse in the 2016 NCAA Sweet 16 (Mar. 25, 2016). 
  • South Carolina has played in 11 regular-season tournament during head coach Dawn Staley's first 12 seasons at the helm. The Gamecocks enter this weekend with a 23-7 record in those tournaments, including a 2-1 record that delivered the Reef Division title in the 2019 Paradise Jam.

I expected this game to be much more competitive than the College of Charleston game earlier this week. Last season the Coyotes came to Colonial Life Arena and battled the Gamecocks down to the wire in losing by 13 pts. They were a top-25 ranked team for most all of last season, and return most of their team this season. Today's game in Sioux Falls, SD is also closer in their backyard.

I wasn't wrong. The game is tied 37-37 at the half - Boston and Beal, perhaps the top two defensive-presence starters for the Gamecocks, only played 8 minutes each in the 1st half after picking up 2 fouls each. The guards Cooke and Henderson have led the way offensively with 13 and 10 pts respectively, but the team overall has struggled to shoot the ball and distribute across the team. They only have 4 assists for the game thus far. South Dakota came ready to play today.....

 
South Dakota responded with a strong period of their own in the 4th, by out-scoring the Gamecocks 23 to 13, but the #1 Gamecocks hold on thanks to the strong 3rd Period outburst, to win 81-71. The Gamecocks (2-0) were led by Destanni Henderson with 19 pts, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists as well as Zia Cooke also with 19 pts and 5 boards. They were joined by Aliyah Boston in foul-limited time in the game with 12 pts, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks - both the assists and blocks led the team. Also reserve Laeticia Amihere, who filled in for Boston while she was on the bench in foul trouble, chipped in 11 pts, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

The Gamecocks close out the tournament in Sioux Falls, SD tomorrow against Gonzaga: they were slated to play  Oklahoma tomorrow, and then Gonzaga Monday, but the Sooners dropped out of the tournament due to not meeting the minimum criteria due to the Covid-19....
