2015 tight ends

Jan. 21, 2015

Class of 2015 tight end commitments Kyle Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) and Connor Redmond (Lawrenceville, Ga./Archer) received visits from their recruiters in the last couple of days and both were conveyed a simple message - there will be an opportunity to play this upcoming season. The Gamecocks lost three tight ends - Rory Anderson, Cody Gibson and Drew Owens - after the season and return only Jerell Adams with any meaningful playing experience.

Walk-on redshirt freshman Jacob August is a player who will have a chance to play some next season but look for redshirt freshman Kevin Crosby to fulfill more of an H-back role, not a true tight end. The freshmen will have a chance to contribute next year, especially in a blocking role.

Markway was visited on Tuesday by special teams coordinator Joe Robinson at his school. Markway's father and head coach were also there for the visit, which lasted approximately an hour. Robinson conveyed the message that playing time on offense and special teams was certainly available and not to plan on redshirting. Markway is up to 240 pounds and has great size - also standing 6-foot-4 - to come in and contribute immediately. Markway also played defensive end for his school and is excited about the opportunity in front of him.

Redmond had recruiter G.A. Mangus by his house earlier this week to visit with the entire family. For the record, his grandmother made her famous spaghetti and meatballs. Mangus passed along that they want Redmond to play some on special teams, which was exciting for Redmond as well.

Both players are scheduled to visit officially this weekend and both are scheduled to enroll in June, which will only enhance their opportunity to play more. It isn't out of the question that one of the two players redshirts but expect at least one to play in 2015. There's a need at tight end this year and at least one should be ready to contribute.
