Intriguing athlete talks of plans

As the quarterback for Lowndes High School during his junior season, 3-star athlete Michael Barrett threw for 2,753 yards with 27 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,283 yards and 21 touchdowns.

When Barrett (5-11, 205) was a sophomore, he mostly played outside linebacker, recording 44 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions. Offensively, he completed 12 of 24 passes for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns, to go along with 169 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns.

On Monday night, after South Carolina offered, Barrett told SEC Country that Muschamp said he could end up playing quarterback, running back or on defense, if he was to sign with the Gamecocks.

So far, Georgia Tech is the only school Barrett has visited. Florida will have him on campus next Saturday.

“I’ll (visit) South Carolina and LSU, probably, and I’m not sure where else,” he said. “Me and my dad will have to talk about it.”

A little less than a year from signing day, Barrett is not in a big hurry to make a decision.

“I haven’t given it that much thought,” he said, “But I’m going to shorten (the list) down to a couple sooner or later, sometime coming up, but not yet. I haven’t too much figured it out yet.”

Georgia Tech, LSU and South Carolina have offered. Maryland, N.C. State, Tennessee, Central Florida, South Florida and West Virginia have, too.

Several factors will be considered as he continues through the recruiting process.

“School-wise, their graduation rate for athletes,” Barrett said. “(I’ll) try not to get too far away from home. … If I get injured, will they still (honor the scholarship).”

Back to South Carolina

Four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) confirmed on Wednesday that he will visit South Carolina on Friday for spring practice.

Hollifield, who is ranked as the No. 4 inside linebacker by the 247Sports composite, has also recently visited North Carolina for the basketball game against Duke.

More visits for Jefferies

Earlier this week, SEC Country reported that 2018 defensive tackle Darnell Jefferies will arrive to South Carolina on Friday for an overnight visit. On Wednesday, the 3-star defensive tackle from Newton High School in Covington, Ga., said the status of that visit is up in the air.

Jefferies (6-4, 280) will still visit South Carolina this weekend. He just isn’t sure when he’ll get to campus.

On Wednesday, he visited Clemson. Georgia is set to host him on Thursday.

Big offer for big target

Over the last day or so, a flood of 247 Crystal Ball picks have been issued for Joe Milton, the 2018 quarterback from Orlando, Fla., who picked up an offer from South Carolina last summer.

Florida is the trendy pick.

Gators coach Jim McElwain dispensed an offer on Tuesday while Milton was on campus visiting from Olympia High School.

“I know the Internet has been freaking out about me going to Florida, but I’m not deciding yet,” Milton said. “I need to wait and evaluate my options. All my offers mean a lot to me and I’m neutral right now. But I know my decision is going to come soon.”

Milton is a 6-foot-5, 222-pound prospect who’s listed as the No. 12 pro-style passer in the Class of 2018.
