2018 DE emerges, attends season opener

September 06, 2017

A new South Carolina recruiting target

Late last week, South Carolina defensive line coach Lance Thompson contacted 3-star defensive end Joseph Boletepeli to let him know the Gamecocks were ready to offer.

“He called me up and told me that they’d seen a couple of games on film from my senior year,” Boletepeli said. “He said they loved it and that’s why they wanted to offer me.”

Thompson also called on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-3.5, 244-pound prospect from Heritage High School in Wake Forest, N.C., has been in contact with South Carolina for most of 2017, but his recruitment slowed down over the summer while he was transferring from another school.

South Carolina’s coaches invited Boletepeli to attend the season opener against North Carolina State. The Wolfpack coaches did, too.

Boletepeli was impressed with what he saw from the Gamecocks in Bank of America Stadium.

“I’d say the offense was moving the ball pretty well. … But the defense was also getting stops,” he said. “They were also getting pressure on the quarterback and their secondary was doing a pretty good job. It was a pretty good game from both teams, so they both did well.”

A trip to Columbia is in the works.

“I plan on it, making a visit to see the coaches and the facilities and the campus,” he said. “That’s one thing I’m looking forward to doing.”

North Carolina is scheduled to host him this month.

“I just want to go visit a couple of more schools, then I’m just going to go with my gut,” Boletepeli said.

Georgia, Maryland, Michigan State, Syracuse, Tennessee and Wake Forest are among his other listed offers.

“Just who wants me the most and somewhere I think I would fit perfectly,” Boletepeli said of his deciding factors. “Academically, as far as the campus, if I feel like it’s a great atmosphere for me to be in, a good learning environment.

“Somewhere I can see myself being successful and making it to the next level.”

Through three games this season, he has “about” 20 tackles, 5.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.
