2018 OL Jovaughn Gwyn wrestling with decision

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three-star offensive guard Jovaughn Gwyn continues to mull over three schools: Duke, North Carolina State and South Carolina.
Gwyn, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 23 offensive guard in the Class of 2018, hopes to make a commitment to one of the three before the start of his senior season at Charlotte’s Harding University High School, though he admitted it might take a little longer.
“The hardest part is, right now, I like all three [schools] equally,” Gwyn said. “It just depends on when I get that feeling for which one I want to pick.”
All three hosted him for visits in late July. South Carolina scored a return for the Spurs Up recruiting event.
“It was more laid back,” Gwyn said. “We got to spend more time with the recruits, so it was the recruits spending more time with each other, rather than talking about where you stand [and] where you don’t stand, stuff like that, so it was just us recruits hanging out and playing dodgeball and stuff.
“It was a fun time, to see if our personalities match.”
Gwyn also visited the Gamecocks in June, during the lineman camp/7-0n-7 tournament.
“I like their new coach, he just came from the NFL, the o-line coach, coach [Eric Wolford], so he has that experience,” Gwyn said. “Just talking to the players, they said their game has changed since he’s been there. And then just the overall atmosphere that’s there, I like it.
“And it’s the SEC, so that’s big-time football. I’m thinking about majoring in business or engineering and they’re one of the top business schools, so that’s good, too.”
Part of the attraction to N.C. State is related to the school’s engineering program.
“They have one of the top engineering [departments]. And, with them, that was my first offer,” Gwyn said. “What kind of puts me on with them is because that was my first offer.”
Academics have helped keep Duke in the conversation..
“With Duke, it’s the education and the whole coaching staff. I like the whole coaching staff,” Gwyn said. “I’ve been down a couple of times and that – my parents love Duke, basically because they like it because of the name. If I was to get a degree from there, they’re just telling me how much weight that would hold, just the degree itself.”
