Shough talks Carolina
As a sizeable segment of South Carolina fans travelled from Columbia to Arizona, 3-star quarterback Tyler Shough did the opposite.
A junior quarterback at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Shough visited South Carolina this past weekend while the men’s basketball team was in Glendale for the Final Four.
“It went well. It was a lot more than I expected, as far as talking with the coaches and facilities,” he said. “I got to talk to coach Muschamp personally for a while. (Sunday), I sat down and had a film review and just kind of talked with coach (Kurt) Roper for about an hour-and-a-half, went over the plays. It went really well.”
According to the 247Sports composite, Shough is ranked as the No. 16 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2018. South Carolina offered late last month.
“I felt really welcome there,” he said. “Being able to talk with both coach Muschamp and coach Roper for a pretty good amount of time and talk about how I would fit with them, what they’re looking for and what they like about me.”
Shough added: “The facilities were great. I mean, everyone has facilities, but those kind of stood out to me. They’re going to be making a huge new complex with the football operations center, over by the practice facilities, so it’s going to be big by the time I get there. It should be finished. It was awesome.
“The field was amazing. It was a pretty good (spring game) turnout, even with the Final Four, but it was a great atmosphere, though. It would be awesome to be there.”
At the time of his visit to South Carolina, Indiana was his only other Power 5 offer, but Shough is also receiving interest from Nebraska and Washington State.
As a junior, Shough completed 142 of 228 passes for 2,079 yards with 27 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He also rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns.
New offers
On Tuesday night, Shough tweeted news of his latest offer, which came from Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
“I’m still open, but South Carolina (and) Indiana are definitely at the top of my list, too. I’m still kind of considering Harvard, but I’m probably more big, Division I-A schools right now,” Shough said late Sunday night.
He indicated to Scout.com on Tuesday night that his offer from the Wolverines could change things up a little bit.
“I grew up a Wolverines fan. My dad was born in Michigan, so it’s pretty big for me,” Shough told Scout.com. “I was very interested and had been talking to coach Harbaugh for a little bit. We spoke for 20 minutes (Tuesday) and I’m just very excited. It’s just awesome.
“I grew up in Michigan gear and I’m a huge Tom Brady fan, so that’s an awesome thing to look at. I don’t know — I’m kind of speechless. It’s pretty cool to get this because it’s been my dream school.”
Another notable South Carolina target, 2018 wide receiver Sam Pinckney III, announced on Tuesday night that he was offered by Georgia. The Greenwood (S.C.) High School 3-star also lists offers from LSU and Florida State.

Following last weekend’s visit to Auburn, 4-star linebacker Zakoby McClain (Valdosta, Ga.) told the gaggle of reporters on campus that he has a new leader.
The Tigers are No. 1.
“I just like the coaches. My dad wants a father-figure type coach. They’ve got that,” McClain said.
South Carolina recently had the No. 12 outside linebacker in the class of 2018 on campus.
“I like the coaches. They make me feel welcome. I’ve got a chance to start, if I go hard and work,” McClain said of the Gamecocks.
Muschamp is pretty involved in the recruitment of the 6-foot, 205-pound prospect from Valdosta High School.
“He’s cool, relaxed. He’s telling me they need me,” McClain said.
