The South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association released the five finalists for Mr. Football in the Palmetto State on Wednesday.
South Carolina commit DL Zacch Pickens of TL Hanna highlights the finalist list, along with Appalachian State commit OT Wyatt Tunall of Chester and Liberty commit QB Johnathan Bennett of Summerville. Undecided prospects RB Ailym Ford of West Florence and QB Darius Tyrell Jackson of Wren round out the list of five.
Pickens is bidding to become the second straight prospect (Former Fort Dorchester QB Dakereon Joyner) and ninth overall to pledge to the Gamecocks and win the award.
The last Mr. Football to leave the state to compete collegiately was James Madison QB Gabe Moloney, an alum of Northwestern High School.
Seven former recipients have played or are currently playing in the National Football League.
The Mr. Football Award will be presented at halftime of the Touchstone Energy North-South Game on December 15th at Brooks Stadium in Conway. The game and the presentation will air live on select South Carolina Radio Network affiliates. Broadcast information will be made available closer to the event.
