2019 defensive tackle de-commits from Georgia

January 25, 2018

One of the top South Carolina recruiting targets from the Class of 2019 is a free-agent. Four-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney Jr. has de-committed from Georgia.

Cheney, who committed to the Dawgs nearly 12 months ago, pulled the plug on his pledge on Thursday, telling Dawg Nation’s Jeff Sentell that he “just needed the time to make the right decision.

“This is a life decision.”

Cheney is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 13 defensive tackle prospect in the 2019 class. Among prospects from the state of Georgia, he’s No. 22-best overall player in the state of Georgia.

The Cedar Grove High School (Ellenwood) junior took several visits to South Carolina while he was still committed to Georgia.

“It was a very hard decision,” Cheney said. “No visits had anything to do with my decision. But if UGA still recruits me, I will still give them a look. Penn State and Tennessee are making a big push.”

Auburn hosted him for a visit over the weekend with his teammate, 5-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, who’s committed to Georgia. For now, Cheney has yet to make any arrangements for a return to South Carolina, but he did visit twice in the fall for the Clemson and Arkansas games. The Gamecocks also hosted him in the spring and summer.
