2019 Opponent Preview: Bucs Travel To Columbia For First Ever Meeting With USC
OPPONENT: Charleston Southern Buccaneers
WHEN: Saturday, September 7ty
WHERE: Williams Brice Stadium (Columbia, SC)
ALL-TIME SERIES RECORD: First all time meeting
LAST MEETING: N/A
2018 RECORD: 5-6 (3-2)
Head Coach…
Autry Denson became just the Bucs fifth head coach in program history when he was hired over the off-season.
Denson has a solid track record, spending time at Bethune-Cookman, Miami (OH), South Florida and Notre Dame.
Denson spent the last four seasons as the Fighting Irish running backs coach, helping ND nearly rush for 2,700 yards a season ago.
He was a fantastic player for the Irish as well, leaving South Bend ranking third all time in rushing yards and second in rushing TDs.
How did they fare in 2018?
Charleston Southern struggled a year ago, finishing with a 5-6 overall record and 3-2 overall in conference play.
The Bucs played one Power Five team a season ago in the Florida Gators, who dismantled CSU on their way to a 53-6 win.
Best Returning Player…
LB JD Soseebee, RS-Senior
Soseebee finished fifth in the Big South in tackles per game and had four games where he accumulated at least 10 tackles for the Bucs.
He led an impressive Bucs defense which placed six overall players on the Big South All-Conference teams.
He finished the 2018 season with 64 tackles, 6 TFL and 0.5 sacks.
Soseebee appears to be the leader of Charleston Southern’s defense and will be their primary threat on defense in 2019.
Overall Outlook…
Autry Denson takes over the reigns in Charleston looking to inject new life into the Charleston Southern football program.
While no opponent should be taken lightly, this should be a warm up game of sorts for the Gamecocks, who face Alabama the following week.
Still, the first match-up in the overall series will be great for football fans within the state and should become a more annual non-conference game for both teams.
2019 SEASON PROJECTION: 6-6
