2019 quarterback target hits important stretch
March 27, 2018
Garrett Shrader is among the top South Carolina recruiting targets at the quarterback position for the 2019 recruiting cycle.
Since last Thursday, the 6-foot-4.5, 200-pound prospect from Charlotte (N.C.) Christian has visited three schools: South Carolina, West Virginia and Penn State. He’ll see Mississippi State on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to South Carolina for the Garnet and Black spring game on Saturday.
Tracey Shrader told SEC Country on Tuesday that he believes his son is nearing the end of his run as a non-committed recruit. A decision will happen sooner, rather than later.
“He’s trying to put it all together,” Tracey said.
According to the 247Sports composite, Garrett is a 3-star who’s ranked as the No. 13 dual-threat quarterback in the country.
“One thing’s for sure, he feels very comfortable at South Carolina,” Tracey said. “When he went down and stayed with a few of the players one time, he said he really loved it there.
“I think he really likes coach [Will] Muschamp. He likes [offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon] and he likes [quarterbacks] coach [Dan] Werner, from what he’s done in the past at Miami and Mississippi and he’s had success putting up points.”
Garrett had another up-close look at South Carolina last Thursday, when he was in town to watch spring practice with his coach and teammate, 2019 linebacker J.T. Killen. Over the weekend, Garrett traveled with his mom to see Penn State and West Virginia.
Like South Carolina, Mississippi State has received four predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The relationship with Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead began while he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Penn State.
“[Garrett] developed a relationship with coach Moorhead and he really likes him,” Tracey said. “His offense fits him. Seeing Trace McSorley, he runs and he throws and Garrett’s bigger than him and he runs faster than him. That kind of intrigues [Garrett] a little bit.”
Florida is among the 18 schools with an offer on the table. The Gators are pushing for a visit, but it’s not clear whether or not Garrett will take them up on the invitation.
At this point, his focus appears to be on three other schools.
“Not knowing the order, but I think South Carolina, Mississippi State and Penn State are all in [the mix]. … I think South Carolina has a chance at being at the top,” Tracey said. “I do know that.”
Saturday will mark the fourth time in 2018 that Garrett’s visited South Carolina.
As a junior, he threw for 2,302 yards with 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 791 yards and 10 scores
