#2/1 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS (14-1, 9-0) AT AUBURN TIGERS (5-11, 0-8)

#2/1 SOUTH CAROLINA (14-1, 9-0) AT AUBURN (5-11, 0-8)
7 P.M. ET  |  AUBURN, ALA.  |  AUBURN ARENA

South Carolina Game Notes (PDF) | WATCH: SEC Network + | LISTEN: 1320 AM/107.5 FM in progress | Live Stats

ABOUT THIS GAME

  • Tonight's game features the SEC's top two rebounders in Aliyah Boston in Auburn's Unique Thompson. On the season, Thompson's SEC-best 14.0 rpg lead Boston's 11.5 average. In league play, Boston has the edge with 12.7 rpg to Thompson's 12.0.
  • The Gamecocks are 25-21 all-time against Auburn, including wins in the last 10 meetings. In the Staley era, South Carolina is 13-3 against the Tigers with five of those wins coming in Auburn.
  • Tonight's game is the 200th SEC regular-season game in head coach Dawn Staley's career. Her 147 SEC regular-season victories are second in the league among active coaches (Gary Blair, 148) and fourth in league history. Her .739 SEC winning percentage is second all-time to only the legendary Pat Summitt's mark of .874.
  • South Carolina is looking for its 26th straight SEC regular-season victory tonight, which would tie Mississippi State's streak for fifth-longest in league history. Tennessee holds the SEC record of 42 consecutive regular-season wins, which it did twice (Jan. 26, 1992 - Jan. 1, 1996; Feb. 7, 2002 - Feb. 6, 2005).
  • A win tonight would be the Gamecocks' 29th straight victory over an SEC opponent, including three wins in the 2020 SEC Tournament, marking the longest such streak in program history. Of the current 28 consecutive wins, 13 have came against a ranked opponent.

Lessee - 9-0 in SEC play versus 0-8 - I like our chances.

I would love to see us break UT's 42 game win streak in SEC play. LeLe is our only Senior and we have some nice recruits coming in, so we should be able to keep it going for a while.
I just want to get through this season unscathed! We have a brutal schedule coming up. Tenn is red-hot and getting better. And we end the season playing Texas A&M. That doesn't even count in the rematches against Kentucky and LSU (the first contest was a close game IMO). Those are the current #2-5 teams in the conference. Plus we play UCONN!

This upcoming end of regular season stretch is going to challenge our team's endurance and capability to perform at a high level through repeated challenges. IMO, starting with UCONN, we're going to find out if this team has what it takes to win a championship. The true test begins soon!

I agree with your concerns. The good thing with the Kentucky and LSU games, is those wins against both earlier this season were on their home courts, so the rematches will be in CLA, and that makes me feel better. The CT game is at their place and the "UConn Factor" with the referees is still in play. I think Boston has Nelson-Ododa's number, and Nelson-Ododa hasn't impressed me much against other top opponents (see the Tennessee and Arkansas games), but CT now has a freshman post in Edwards that has been starting to get more playing time and has done some good things. Both Nelson-Ododa and Edwards have been foul-prone, but I could see them being deployed as a tag-team to wear down Aliyah, who has been a bit foul-prone herself this season. Beuckers has also been exceptional offensively as a freshman, but hopefully our more experienced guards and Brea can make her freshman tendencies come out in our game with them.

As for our opponent tonight, I think we may be in store for an offensive outburst by the team, but it is another road game. About the only really good thing Auburn has going for them is their post Unique Thompson - she's easily their top player and has the argument of being the top post in the SEC this season. She's out-scoring and out-rebounding Boston (she leads the nation in rebounds per game), so she will be a force for Aliyah to deal with tonight.

After Thompson, it thins out substantially. Auburn is a good stealing team (leads the SEC) and due to that they are strong in forced turnovers stats, but they themselves are poor at ball security (not by having the ball stolen as much as turning it over from traveling, throwing it away, charges, etc.), and USC is at the top of the league in turnovers per game, so perhaps that all will cancel each other out.

Auburn is a strong offensive rebounding team (thanks to Thompson), and a decent overall rebounding team (again, thanks to Thompson). After that - woof! They are outside the top 200 rankings in most other defensive stats - blocks per game, Score Defense, FG % Defense, 3-pt FG % Defense. And they are ALSO outside the top 200 in a lot of offensive stats too - Total FG %, 3-pt FG % (outside the top 300 in that). They are inside the top 200 in Scoring Offense - they are 175th.

About what you'd expect from a team that's win-less in conference play. Hopefully the team jumps out on the Tigers, stays on them, and then allows the reserves to get a LOT of court time with a huge point cushion. Don't look past Auburn to CT - they'll still be there, afterwards. Connecticut played last Sunday like the Gamecocks did, but then they played yesterday against lowly St. Johns, who they slaughtered. But they had 2-3 players sit out to rest up from dings and dents, such as starter Christyn Williams. Then they play tomorrow at Marquette who along with DePaul are the next-toughest teams after CT in the Big East this season.

I still expect CT to slaughter them as well, but the Huskies getting to play two opponents this week to our just playing one may tire them out a bit for our game on Monday night. At least that's what I'm hoping for.....

Gamecocks leap out to a 26-6 lead after one Quarter of play. Its turning out much as I expected - the Gamecocks are 11-17 from the field (65%), while the Tigers are 2-10 (20%). Nine Gamecocks have already seen the floor in action, but Zia Cooke had a monstrous 1st Period with 14 pts on 5-6 shooting, 3-4 from the three....

Gamecocks extend their lead to 47-18 at the half. Cooke leads the way with a strong 17 pts on 6-9 shooting. The Gamecocks are shooting 58% to the Tigers' 20%, and out-rebounded them 27-16. In the bigs match-up, Boston has 6 pts on 3-3 shooting and 7 rebounds, with 1 foul. Thompson has 2 pts on 1-9 shooting with 5 boards, 2 steals, and 2 fouls. Romi Levy leads the Tigers with 6 pts off of 2 3-ptrs.....

Auburn comes out for the 3rd Period with renewed effort and out-scores South Carolina 21-18, but the Gamecocks still lead 65-39 after three quarters. Cooke went scoreless in the 3rd and still sits on 17 pts, but Boston scored 8 pts in the period and has 14 pts on 7-8 shooting, with 8 rebounds. Thompson with 3 pts on 1-10 with 7 rebounds and 3 steals - both Boston and Thompson have 3 fouls now. Auburn came out shooting 3-3 from the 3-pt line in the Qtr., and are now 6-12 for the game: they came into the game dead last in the SEC in 3-pt shooting at 25%....

Well.....

The starters for the Gamecocks only played 25 minutes each in an easy win, and I guess that was what Coach Staley was hoping for, with Connecticut next on the schedule.

But what I'm quite sure Staley was NOT looking for, was the pretty sloppy play from both the starters and then especially the reserves when they came in, for the 2nd half. This was led by Laeticia Amihere, who did lead the team with 9 rebounds, but seemed to have left her hands back home in Columbia: she was 2-9 from the field, 2-6 at the line, with 3 fouls - I think all were offensive fouls - and led the team with 5 turnovers in 22 minutes. As a result, the Auburn Tigers out-scored the Gamecocks 19-12 in the 4th Qtr., and 15-2 in the final 6:27 of the game. Still the Gamecocks escape with a 77-58 win.

Zia Cooke led the Gamecocks with her 17 1st-half pts, Boston scored 14 pts with 8 boards, Victaria Saxton added 11 pts, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals, and Lele Grissett chipped in 10 pts and 4 rebounds. Destanni Henderson only scored 4 pts on 4 FG attempts, but led the team with 9 assists.

Auburn was led by Honesty Scott-Grayson with 15 pts and 4 rebounds. Leading Tiger scorer Unique Thompson added 10 pts on 4-13 shooting, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Thompson stayed in late in the game against the Gamecock reserves, scoring 7 pts on 3-3 FGs - all 7 pts scored in the final half of the 4th Quarter.

Want to document this as I saw it posted during the game on SECN+, and I was wondering about it - with this win USC has now won 26 consecutive SEC regular-season games, and 29 consecutive SEC games overall, including SECT games. It is USC's current program record for such regular-season streaks, but

1) Tennessee: 36 games (2010-2012)

2) Tennessee: 31 games (1997-1999)

3) South Carolina: 30 games (2015-17)

4) Tennessee: 29 games (1993-1995)

5) South Carolina: 29 games (2020-2021)*

6) Tennessee: 28 games (2000-2001)

The above USC pregame preview however states Tennessee as having the longest streak of "42 consecutive regular-season wins, which it did twice (Jan. 26, 1992 - Jan. 1, 1996; Feb. 7, 2002 - Feb. 6, 2005)", so I'll have to research those and update here.....

Update

OK, the above stats refer to TOTAL SEC consecutive win streaks, including wins in the SEC Tournament and even in the NCAA Tournament. What the USC Preview above was referring to was strictly regular-season SEC win streaks, which mean if you lose in the SECT or NCAAT to SEC fellow opponents between undefeated SEC regular-season results, it wouldn't halt the streak of the regular seasons, but it WOULD for the above list that was displayed during the game on SECN+.

And that should've made sense to me, as the USC streaks above reference total SEC games, and not just regular-season SEC consecutive wins, which the Gamecocks are currently on their program record of 26 straight SEC regular-season wins - the streaks of 30 and 29 games above represent total SEC wins......

So, for just REGULAR-SEASON SEC win streaks, the list goes as:

1) Tennessee: 42 games (1992-1996)

2) Tennessee: 42 games (2002-2005)

3) Tennessee: 31 games (2000-2002)

4) Tennessee: 28 games (1997-1999)

5) Mississippi State: 26 games (2017-2019)

5) South Carolina: 26 games (2019- 2021)*

Pat Summitt, the Lady Vols HC from 1974-2012 before WBB was cool.

Just before the 1974–75 season, with women's college basketball still in its infancy and not yet an NCAA-sanctioned sport, 22-year-old Summitt became a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, and was named head coach of the Lady Vols after the previous coach suddenly quit. Summitt earned $250 monthly and washed the players' uniforms – uniforms purchased the previous year with proceeds from a doughnut sale. Summitt recalled that era of women's basketball during a February 2009 interview with Time. "I had to drive the van when I first started coaching," Summitt said. "One time, for a road game, we actually slept in the other team's gym the night before. We had mats, we had our little sleeping bags. When I was a player at the University of Tennessee at Martin, we played at Tennessee Tech for three straight games, and we didn't wash our uniforms. We only had one set. We played because we loved the game. We didn't think anything about it."[6]

During Summitt's first year as head coach, four of her players were only a year younger than she was and all were from Tennessee high schools, which until 1980 [7] employed a six-person game where offensive and defensive players never crossed mid-court. She coached her first game for Tennessee on Dec. 7, 1974 against Mercer University in Macon, Georgia; the Lady Vols lost 84–83.[8] Her first win came almost a month later when the Lady Vols defeated Middle Tennessee State, 69–32 on Jan. 10, 1975.[9] The Lady Vols won the Tennessee College Women's Sports Federation (TCWSF) Eastern District Championship for the third straight year. However, the team finished 4th overall in the TCWSF (they had been second the previous two years), and were not invited to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournament.[10]

In her second season, Summitt coached the Lady Vols to a 16–11 record while earning her 1976 master's degree in physical education and training as the co-captain of the 1976 U.S. Women's Olympic basketball team that won a silver medal in Montreal. Starting with the 1976–77 season, Summitt directed two 20-win teams, winning back-to-back AIAW Region II championships. The Lady Vols defeated 3-time AIAW champion Delta State by 20 points in 1978, and earned Tennessee its first number one ranking.[11] 1978 saw the Lady Vols participate in their first AIAW Final Four, where they finished third. Summitt also recorded her 100th win during this season, a 79–66 victory over NC State.[12] Tennessee closed the 1970s by winning the first-ever SEC tournament, and returning to the AIAW Final Four, where they finished runner-up to Old Dominion, 68–53.[9]

Yeah I found the stats confusing as well. If anything, it just shows that Dawn is building a dynasty that may compete with the likes of Pat Summit's legacy in this league!

As far as my UConn comment in an earlier post, I only mentioned them because the matchup occurs in the middle of SEC play and could indirectly affect our performance in conference.
