#5/4 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS AT VANDERBILT COMMODORES

#5/4 SOUTH CAROLINA (8-1, 3-0 SEC) AT VANDERBILT (4-2, 0-1 SEC)
8 P.M. ET  |  NASHVILLE, TENN.  |  MEMORIAL GYMNASIUM

South Carolina Game Notes (PDF) | WATCH: SECN+ | LISTEN: 107.5 The Game | Live Stats | Media Availability

ABOUT THIS GAME

  • Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 21-18, but the Gamecocks have a 13-2 edge in the Dawn Staley era, including the current 12-game win streak over Vanderbilt.
  • The Gamecocks are looking to open SEC play 4-0 for the third-straight season. After last season's 16-0 SEC slate, South Carolina has won 19 straight regular-season league games. Their longest SEC win streak is 24 games – Jan. 3, 2016, through Jan. 26, 2017.
  • A win today would be Dawn Staley's 142nd in SEC regular-season action, moving her into sole possession of fourth place all-time in most SEC regular-season victories. It would break her current tie with her former Olympic head coach Van Chancellor who amassed 141 wins in 20 seasons at Ole Miss and LSU combined. Third place is owned by Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair (144), second place is former Georgia head coach Andy Landers with 273, and first place of course is former Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt with 306 wins.

I apologize in advance for saying this. And it has nothing to do with basketball ability or anything else.

But dayum - we got some pretty ladies on our team.

I have been thinking about Brea -she is the one person on our team that we need to get going right now, in order to get to the next level. She rebounds, plays D, handles the ball - everything but score. She is more than capable but needs that scorer's mentality - she is the weak link of our Offense now. If she starts scoring, it will open up everyone else.
The league seems to be going for a "glam" look this season for WBB and I fully support it. LOL

Gamecocks jump out to a 30-13 lead at the end of the 1st Period. The team showed great early offensive balance, as the first 5 shots made were one each by the starting five, getting the entire unit into the scoring off the bat. The biggest impact were made by the 4th and 5th options of the unit, as Victaria Saxton led the way with 11 pts on 5-5 shooting (she had one free throw make), and Brea Beal scored 10 pts on 4-5 shooting, including 2-2 from the 3-pt line....

Gamecocks lead 49-13 into the halftime break. Kinda feel bad for Vanderbilt - they had a scoreless 2nd Quarter, shooting 0-16 for the period. Victaria Saxton leads the Gamecocks with 13 pts in 14 minutes shooting 6-6 on the game. Beal has 10 pts in 10 minutes.....

Whoa - I called it on Brea. She has not had many games with 10 points, much less a single quarter.

She does so much for the team except score - but when she looks to score, it really opens our offense up.
Yes you did: she has improved on her overall FG % and has taken more 3-pt attempts as well. She still struggling mightily at the FT line, but I agree on the team benefiting big time if she can get her offense going. She's doing well tonight....

An SEC update: LSU and Texas A&M entangled in a tight overtime game in Baton Rouge - with little over 1 minute left in OT, LSU has held the Aggies scoreless in the OT period, and leads 59-54. Would be a huge loss for the Aggies, as they are the last unbeaten team in the league.....

Gamecocks extend their lead to 82-27 through 3 quarters. Saxton leads with a career high of 22 pts on 10-11 shooting, and Beal also has a career high of 17 pts on 7-9 shooting, and 3-4 behind the 3-pt arc....

#5/4 South Carolina Gamecocks improve to 9-1 and 4-0 with a 106-43 rout of under-manned Vanderbilt Commodores (4-3). It's the 3rd 100+ pt game of the season for the Gamecocks.

Lots of stats to go around for the team: first off, 2 pts were removed from Victaria Saxton's total and given to Aliyah Boston. But Saxton still scores her career high of 20 pts - surpassing her previous high of 19 pts she scored against Arkansas in her freshman season - on 9-10 shooting, with 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot. Brea Beal also established her new career high with 17 pts on 7-9 shooting, with 3 boards.

Destanni Henderson added 12 pts along with her career-high tying 9 assists and 7 rebounds. Laeticia Amihere came off the bench to add 11 pts, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Boston added 9 pts, 10 boards, 4 blocks, and 2 steals in 19 minutes. Senior Lele Grissett added 7 pts and a career high 12 rebounds, Zia Cooke scored 9 pts, and Destiny Littleton chipped in 8 pts on 2 3-ptrs and 3 rebounds.

Next for the Gamecocks will be top-25 Arkansas at Colonial Life Arena Monday night at 7:00 pm.

For Vanderbilt, Koi Love righted herself from a tough 1st half to lead the Commodores with 18 pts and 9 rebounds....
