Gamecocks up 30-7 after the first quarter. They held the Cougars to 2-21 shooting and they didn't make their first field goal until 9 minutes in. Ladies are looking good so far with a lot of rotations already.

The 20-21 CWBB season has already been ravaged by the Covid-19 surging across the nation, with dozens of games cancelled or postponed to start the season. This AFTER the season schedules being stunted due to the pandemic. Connecticut has already suspended basketball activities until middle December, and cancelled their first 4 games, including games versus Miss State and Louisville. Our game with CT in February will be a challenge, unless things chance on the pandemic front: the state of Connecticut is requiring  a 14-day quarantine for people traveling into the state from out of state. Don't know how that would work for our team going to play there.

For anyone who is curious, the starting lineup for the Gamecocks was:

Cooke

Henderson

Boston

Beal

Saxton

I guess the big question was would it be Saxton or Grissett replacing Herbert-Harrigan. I think most expected Henderson to replace Harris. But both Saxton AND Grissett are leading the team with 9 pts each, behind only Cooke's 11 pts. Grissett just tied Cooke with her 11th points, so those former reserves (Grissett still a reserve) are stepping up today, even though this is not the stiffest opponent....

Gamecocks running away with it 96-28 after 3 periods. They have scored 30, 32, and 34 pts through the 3 periods.

Saxton doing her best to fill the void left by Kiki Herbert-Harrigan: she has 19 pts, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 2 steals. She leads the team in points, rebounds, and blocks thus far. Not too shabby. CofC is the type opponent that Victaria thrives against - she's not the tallest "big", but is hyper-athletic with long arms. CoC is not a very tall opponent either, so Saxton is able to apply her athleticism to dominating fashion. Against opponents where the girls she has to defend are typically taller than her (6-3 or taller) gave her trouble, although last season she did had a above-solid season off the bench....

Great game to watch. the next 3 week be a little more competition. 119-38 was a good way to start the season.

The #1 ranked Gamecocks win their opening game of the 2020-21 season over the College of Charleston 119-38. The game was a rout that saw seven Gamecocks score in double figures, and four of them turn in double-double efforts.

Leading the way was F Victaria Saxton with 19 pts, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 2 steals in mostly 3 periods of play. Behind her was G Zia Cooke with 18 pts, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Adding to their production was reserve G Lele Grissett with 13 pts, 10 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocks, G Destanni Henderson with 13 pts, 6 rebounds, team-leading 4 assists, and 4 steals, freshman G Eniya Russell with 12 pts, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in her first action as a Gamecock, P Aliyah Boston with 11 pts, 12 rebounds, and 1 block, and reserve F Laeticia Amihere with 11 pts, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Pretty strong offensive distribution all around. The team pulled down 73 rebounds, out-rebounding the size-strapped Cougars 73-28. Reserve transfer G Destiny Littleton almost had a double-double herself in her first action as a Gamecock, with 7 pts and 8 rebounds, mostly all in the final period of the game.

The schedule gets a good bit more challenging with their next games, as the Gamecocks travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and play in the Women's Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic, with their first game on Saturday against South Dakota at 3:30 PM. The Gamecocks played a top-25 ranked South Dakota Coyotes last season in Columbia, and prevailed in a tight game 73-60.

After the game with the 'Yotes, they will play Oklahoma on Sunday, and Gonzaga on Monday. All three opponents are expected to be much tougher than the Cougars were today.....
