247sports.com's The Big Spur's John Whittle posted a free article regarding 2020 incoming freshman Jaquaze Sorrells' situation and timeline for enrolling into classes at USC. Sorrells tweeted today on his situation:
January is the start for Spring Semester. The late arrival isn't too big of a news update - everyone pretty much understood that Sorrells was not going to play his freshman season, and was essentially going to be on a academic red-shirt. However, this is news in two big respects: first, coming in for the Spring Semester means that Sorrells will lose the chance to practice with the team this season, as sort of a red-shirt scout team member, which would help prepare him for the 2020 season;
Second, by delaying his enrollment to January, this means that Sorrells - who already took a scholarship spot from the 2019 cycle, of which he was an initial member of, now takes away a spot from the 2020 cycle as well. This is similar to how WR Tyquan Johnson's recruitment went, that took away spots from both the 2018 and 2019 cycles.
There is also the question left un-answered, regarding Sorrells' academic situation: he was expected to use his initial red-shirt year to focus on his course work and get his grades healthy. Coming in January pushes that back as well: he will begin his NCAA 5 years to play 4 eligibility clock at that time. So would he red-shirt 2020, and first play in 2021? If not, will there be enough time for him to work on his grades to have him ready to go for 2020?
