Luke Doty
USC continues to build up the talent for its quarterback room with a commitment Monday night from 2020 Luke Doty (6-2 190) of Myrtle Beach.  The commitment comes a day after Doty and his family visited USC.  He also had offers from NC State, Virginia Tech, TCU, Auburn, Duke, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Florida State and others.

“The biggest thing for me was the importance of being an in state guy and playing for the great state of South Carolina and being represented on that stage,” Doty said. “It’s close to home and it’s a place where my family and friends can go to watch games and have a great time.   “South Carolina has always been high up on the list and they’ve always been like family to us. They’ve treated us so well throughout these past few years.”

Doty made several visits and camp appearances and USC and the program continued to grow on him.  He said it was a few weeks ago when he got the feeling USC was the right fit.

“After everything was kind of settled down a little bit, I had a lot of time to think about it and talk about it with my family. We sat down and laid some things out and we got a plan together. I said South Carolina is where I want to and where I feels best at,” Doty said.

USC quarterbacks coach Dan Werner made Doty a high priority for the 2020 class.  He made that clear to him in his conversations and that was big in his decision making process.

“He always told me, I’m his guy, that I’m number one and I’m a big priority for him,” Doty said. “For me, that means a lot especially coming from him and South Carolina being the big state school and home. We’ve developed a great relationship over the past few months and I’ve really gotten to know him and I look forward to continuing to develop that relationship with him.”

He will join an ever improving quarterback room that will have Elite 11 quarterbacks Ryan Hilinski and Dakereon Joyner sitting at the table when he arrives.

“They’ve definitely got a great quarterback room,” he said. “I’ve been around those guys for a few years now. They are all just amazing guys and treat each like brothers. They push each other and pull for each other no matter what. That’s the kind of family atmosphere that I’m drawn to and that I love.”

Doty has been the  backup quarterback for the Seahawks the past three seasons but he’ll be the starter moving forward.  Last season he passed for 700 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed for 250 yards and 1 score.  He also caught 35 passes for 391 yards and 5 touchdowns.  He said his versatility is definitely a strength.

“I can go out there and line up at wide receiver and I can also go out there and throw the ball,” he said.  “I definitely think playing different positions, even defense, has helped my development as a quarterback and definitely an athlete for sure.”

“He’s just dynamic,” said Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson.  “A lot of kids that can run exceptionally well that play the quarterback position a lot of time, when they get forced out of the pocket will just take off and run.  He’s a kid that still keeps his eyes down field once he gets out of the pocket.  He has a great ability to extend plays, not only with his feet but with his arm.  I think that makes him exciting.”

Doty has any months to sit on his commitment before he can sign and make it official.  As for any further recruiting activity on his part, Doty said he’ll have none of that.

“I’m 110 percent committed to the University of South Carolina. My recruitment is over. I won’t be making any more visits besides South Carolina. I know where I want to be and that’s with the South Carolina Gamecock family.”

Doty gives the Gamecocks four commitments for their 2020 class.
