2020 WR Porter Rooks offered; 4-star QB set to visit

April 12, 2017

Rooks lands offer

Porter Rooks is well on his way to being one of the top 2020 prospects in the country. Last week, during his visits to Auburn and Alabama, each of the schools offered.

On Wednesday, while visiting South Carolina, Porter added one more offer during a meeting in Muschamp’s office, with running backs coach Bobby Bentley and wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon also on hand.

“It was a pretty cool way for them to offer, in (Muschamp’s) office,” Rooks said. “I felt like it’s a bit more personal, especially if it’s in the coach’s office.”

The Gamecocks hosted Rooks (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) in the fall for the Missouri game.

“I definitely do like South Carolina. They were one of the first schools to start talking to me, as an eighth-grader, so they’ve been there,” Rooks said. “I’ve definitely built a relationship with coach Bentley and I’m building a relationship with coach B-Mac as well. Hopefully, I can start building a relationship with coach Muschamp.

“South Carolina is definitely going in the upward direction. That’s always good with a school that’s recruiting me.”

Last week, South Carolina offered Porter’s classmate at Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C.), defensive end Jacolbe Cowan. Rooks’ offer sheet also includes Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

“I feel like, when you step on campus, it has to feel like home. It has to feel like a place you don’t mind being, outside of your house,” Rooks said. “And the style of just throwing the ball. Because, of course, you want to go to a school that’s going to put the ball in your hands.”

4-star QB set to visit

South Carolina will host 4-star quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson for a visit on Wednesday.

Thompson-Robinson, who’s ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018 according to the 247Sports composite, visited North Carolina on Tuesday.

The 6-1.5, 195-pound quarterback attends Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, but he’s originally from South Carolina.

Michigan and UCLA are believed to be among the primary contenders for Thompson-Robinson, who is rated as the No. 50 overall prospect in the country.

More offers

At least two other prospects were offered by South Carolina on Tuesday, including 2020 quarterback Max Johnson, the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson.

Max, a 2020 prospect from Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Ga., also has offers from Florida State, Georgia, Miami and LSU.

Four-star wide receiver JaMarr Chase was offered by the Gamecocks on Tuesday morning. Chase, who’s from Archbishop Rummel in Metairie, La., got the word from tight ends coach Ken Washington. Chase has yet to determine whether he’ll visit the Gamecocks.
