COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The South Carolina Gamecocks prepare to travel to Hoover Alabama to participate in the 2021 Southeastern Conference Tournament. The Gamecocks will face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2nd game of the first round at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium - the game's first pitch is scheduled at 1:00 PM CT (2:00 PM ET) and will be televised on the SEC Network with Tom Hart, Ben McDonald and Chris Burke on the call. The game will also be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody calling the action. The Gamecocks are coming off of a close series loss to 4th-ranked Tennessee in Founders Park: after splitting the two first games of the series, they fell 5-4 in the deciding game with a man in scoring position and only 1 out in the bottom 9th inning.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Tuesday
South Carolina
CJ Weins (Jr. RHP) 1-0, 1.93 ERA, 9 BB, 11 SO
Alabama Tyler Ras (Jr., RHP) 6-4, 5.42 ERA, 20 BB, 53 SO

SETTING THE SEC TOURNAMENT STAGE
South Carolina comes into the tournament as the 4th ranked team out of the SEC Eastern Division and the 7th Seed overall, while Alabama is the 5th ranked team in the Western Division, and the 10th overall Seed. The winner of this game will face the #2 Seed Tennessee Volunteers in Wednesday's 2nd Rounds. The Vols received a first Round bye. In order to reach the SEC Championship Game, the Gamecocks would have to play six games in as many days, and win the first five.

SCOUTING ALABAMA
The Crimson Tide were swept by Mississippi State this past weekend, and are 1-7 in losing their past 3 SEC series to the Bulldogs as well as LSU and Vanderbilt. They had one game versus Vanderbilt cancelled due to inclement weather. Alabama is led by Sam Praytor with 13 home runs and 44 RBI, while Zane Denton leads the team with a .317 batting average. Dylan Smith (1-7, 4.04 ERA) leads the Tide with 14 starts, 82.1 innings pitched and 100 strikeouts, while Tyler Ras (6-4, 5.42 ERA) leads the team in wins. Chase Lee (6-0, 1.38 ERA) is tied with Ras in wins and leads the Tide with 7 saves.

SERIES VS. ALABAMA
Carolina holds a 35-27 series advantage on Alabama heading into the tournament. The Gamecocks have won 16 of the last 22 games against the Tide, with the last win the sole one of their last series in Tuscaloosa 5-4 in 2019 in extra innings to prevent the sweep. In that game,
TJ Hopkins would score the go-ahead run in the top 12th inning on a wild pitch. Brett Kerry would get the win after pitching the final 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball, with 4 strikeouts and only 1 walk.

The Gamecocks and Crimson Tide have faced each other three times in the SEC Tournament, with the Tide having the 2 to 1 edge. One of those wins was in the Championship Game in 2002 that the Tide won 6-2. The other 2 SECT games were both opening round games - in 2003, the Tide would upset the #2 Seed Gamecocks 9-7, then in 2009 the #5 Seed Gamecocks would win 9-5 in 11 innings over the #4 Seeded Tide.

Game is scoreless heading into the top 3rd inning. South Carolina is the home team in this game - I guess that's obvious, being the higher seed. CJ Weins has 30 pitches through 2.0 innings.....

Weins struggling in the top 3rd: with 1 out, he struck out the next batter but it was on a wild pitch and the batter reached 1st safely. Another wild pitch allows him to advance to 2B. The batter at the plate then doubles in the runner for the first score of the game, for Alabama.

Then Weins walks the next batter. The man on 2B advances on another wild pitch - the 3rd in the inning and 4th overall of the game for Weins. Alabama men on the corners with just 1 out......

Weins gets the next batter to pop up to 3B for the 2nd out. But ANOTHER wild pitch advances the man on 1B to 2B, and they are on 3B and 2B with 2 outs.

The next batter is intentionally walked to load the bases - he was Alabama's top hitter.

And that's it for CJ. John Gilreath comes in out of the bullpen with a lot of baserunners to inherit.....

Gilreath gives up a 2 RBI single and a 3 RBI home run before getting the final out on a strike out, and the Tide lead 6-0 into the bottom 3rd......

In the top 4th inning, Gilreath walks the lead-off batter, and then gives up a single to the next. Daniel Lloyd comes in for Gilreath. An RBI fly-out and a RBI double score 2 more runs for Alabama. They are in firm control of this game, and our own offense appears to be still back in Columbia, SC.

8-0 Alabama, bottom 4th......

I think today was about Kingston playing it safe if some guys are banged up.

Having said that, though, the lack of hitting is such a problem that even having Mahoney healthy and pitching today would not have made a difference.

A batting machine can only simulate so much of a live pitcher on the mound and our pitching staff must be having some issues with tired arms and such.  Kingston must be limiting their time on the mound in practice to limit fatigue and risk of injury.  That would explain our hitting issues if guys aren't getting the reps behind the plate like they should.

Lack of depth that gets highlighted by injuries can be an indication of poor coaching.  Still not sold on Meade as a pitching coach.
