COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team will play its first game in 346 days as the Gamecocks open the 2021 season this weekend, hosting Dayton at Founders Park. The two teams start the series on Friday, Feb. 19 with a 4 p.m. first pitch. The series continues Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday, Feb. 21 with a noon start. All three games will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. All games also will be broadcast on The Game 107.5 FM with Derek Scott, Tommy Moody and Brad Muller on the call. Carolina was off to a 12-4 start in 2020 before the pandemic shut down the season. Carolina returns 22 players, including eight position starters, from last year's team and are picking in the top-25 in five of college baseball's six major polls.

Weather for today in Columbia shows rain during the morning hours ending around noon-1 pm-ish. Should be clear the rest of the evening with minimal chance of rain around first pitch time of 4 pm. The evening will see clouds and temps around mid to upper 40s dropping to around 40 degrees near 10 pm....

The Yardcocks are up on Dayton 10-1 in the bottom 6th inning. Two outs and Wes Clarke is on 2B after Andrew Eyster singled him over. Jeff Heinrich hit into a Fielder's Choice at 2B and the inning is done.

Overall, Clarke and Eyster have done the damage for the Gamecocks in this game, with 4 RBI each: Clarke is 2-2 with a 3-RBI HR and two walks, while Eyster is 3-4 with a grand slam HR and a triple. Brady Allen is 3-3 with a RBI, a triple  and two doubles batting lead-off.

Thomas Farr pitched 6.0 innings allowing 5 hits and one run, which was earned as a solo homerun. He had 8 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks. Magdiel Cotto has come in for Farr in relief.

Colin Burgess hits a 2-RBI in the bottom 8th and the score is now 12-1 Gamecocks. Burgess is 2-4 with 3 RBIs now, joining Eyster who is 3-4 with 4 RBIs, Clarke who is 3-3 with 4 RBIs, and Allen who is 3-3 with 1 RBI (he's the lead-off batter so he doesn't get a lot of RBI opportunities)....

Gamecocks win 12-1 to start the season off to a strong start over Dayton. Thomas Farr (1-0) gets the win. Game #2 will start at 1 PM as Brennan Jordan takes the mound....
