SCOUTING VANDERBILT
The Commodores picked up a 4-1 win over Belmont on Tuesday night, as Vanderbilt's pitching staff allowed just three hits in the win. Jayson Gonzalez drove in a pair while Christian Little struck out seven in the win. On the season, Gonzalez is hitting .372 with 14 RBI while Kumar Rocker is 4-0 and has not allowed an earned run in 23 innings of work.

SERIES VS. VANDERBILT
Carolina holds a 58-36 series lead on Vanderbilt heading into Friday's game. The Commodores swept Carolina in 2019 in Columbia. In the last meeting in Nashville in 2018, Carolina won on Friday and Sunday in a pair of one-run contests. Carlos Cortes and Jonah Bride each drove in three runs in the 10-9 series finale win on that Sunday.

FARR RECORDS CAREER HIGH VS. LONGHORNS
Thomas Farr struck out a career high 10 batters in Carolina's 4-1 loss to Texas on March 12. Farr went six innings in the start, allowing seven hits and a run with just one walk to go along with the 10 punchouts. On the season, Farr is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA.

SEC PLAY FOR OPENERS
The Southeastern Conference begins league play this weekend across the region. It will be the first league contests since the 2019 season as the 2020 ledger was postponed a day before SEC play was about to begin. This will be the first time Carolina has opened with Vanderbilt since 2008 and the first time the Gamecocks will open on the road since they started league play at Tennessee in 2017.

0-0 Bottom 5th inning:

An outstanding pitcher's duel to this point, then Thomas Farr gets into trouble:

After getting the first out on a grounder, Farr surrenders the first hit of the game for the Commodores, a single. Farr hadn't labored at all in the game up to this point, and had actually out-pitched the All-World Pitcher for Vandy Kumer Rocker, one could argue. But after giving up the first hit, perhaps Farr becomes a different pitcher when having to pitch out of the stretch.

The Vandy base-runner on 1B advances to 2B on a passed ball to Colin Burgess. The next batter hits a RBI double. Then consecutive singles drives in the next run - Farr gets the final two outs on a strike out and ground out, but Vanderbilt scores two runs and leads 2-0. In this game, these runs could be insurmountable....

2-0 Vanderbilt, top 6th inning....

2-0 Vanderbilt, top 6th inning:

George Callil strikes out to lead off. Braylen Wimmer is now hitting in the #1 spot of the order - he singles. Brady Allen is now hitting #2 - he reaches safe on a failed fielder's choice, and there are Gamecocks on 2B and 1B, with 1 out.

Josiah Sightler doubles to left field. scoring Wimmer!! Now there are Gamecocks on 3B and 2B, with 1 out, and lead is cut in half.

Wesley Clarke is up next - a simple base hit could take the lead. He grounds out to 3rd, but still pushes in the 2nd run of the inning. The game is tied now, 2 outs.

Andrew Eyster swings through the third strike to end the Gamecock threat, but we tie the game up. I guess those 2 Vandy runs weren't so tall after all....

2-2 Bottom 6th......

Man, that Vandy fake dirt just looks stupid.

Yeah LOL. Texas also plays on astro-everything turf, grass, dirt and all. Hopefully we'll be familiar with it this weekend - they say liners can trick the infielders and balls can slip underneath their gloves if they aren't careful. The balls just zip right on through with little bounce...

2-2 bottom 6th inning:

Man. I need to do a check on how many innings of games played thus far, where our pitchers either walk or allow a base hit to lead-off opposing batters each inning. It sure seems like an awful lot of them, if not most by far....

The next batter strikes out. The Vandy man on 1st steals 2B, but the batter Farr was focusing on strikes out as well, for Out #2.

Farr strikes out the fourth Vandy batter, striking out the side around the lead-off walk.

2-2 top 7th inning.....

2-2 Top 7th inning:

David Mendham is walked to start the inning. Now that's more like it!

Well crappers. Jeff Heinrich hits into a double play.....

Burgess strikes out for the final out......

2-2 bottom 7th.....

2-2 Bottom 7th inning:

Farr steps back up on the mound. He has thrown 95 pitches thus far, so this may be a batter by batter inning.

Well, the lead-off batter is walked, so that answers that. The Gamecocks call to the bullpen. Thomas has pitched a hell of a game, and has his team in position to win the game, if they can.

Jack Mahoney comes in for Farr.....

He gets the first batter he faces to fly out. The next batter grounds out to 2B. Man on 2B and 2 outs.

This batter is 9th in the order, but is one of Vandy's top hitters. May be an intentional unintentional here. Yep - he walks on 4 pitches.

That's it for Mahoney - Andrew Peters comes in....

The first batter he faces singles past him, scoring a run. 3-2 Vanderbilt. Still 2 outs. Lets get this one, Andrew!

Peters strikes out the batter! End of inning, but a run scores as Vanderbilt retakes the lead.

3-2 Vanderbilt, top 8th inning. Callil, Wimmer, and Allen up next.....

3-2 Vanderbilt, top 8th inning:

Callil strikes out looking. Also need to see how many of his Ks are of the looking variety. He is in the lineup clearly for his defensive skills.

Wimmer strikes out. Allen strikes out. Big ouch there.....

3-2 Vanderbilt bottom 8th...

Mahoney killed us by letting the top of the order get in with runners on base.
He walked the 9th Vandy batter who is hitting .356, with 2 outs to face the #1 batter who is hitting .231. That guy drove in the go-ahead run off of Peters, who is good enough to have gotten him out. The staff rolled the dice - our guys just couldn't execute when they needed to....

Rocker is an awesome pitcher.

Yes he is. I've both read and heard that Rocker and the Saturday guy Leiter could possibly go 1-2 overall in the draft. Definitely both are top 10 draft prospects. But either way Rocker is the consensus overall #1. Leiter confuses me because he is listed as a sophomore, and did not red-shirt - perhaps its an age thing?? Leiter is former MLB pitcher Al Leiter's son, and the nephew of former MLB pitcher Mark Leiter.....

3-2 Vanderbilt, top 9th inning:

Sightler strikes out.

Clarke walks.

Noah Myers pinch-runs for Clarke at 1B.

Eyster steps in. Myers reaches 2nd on a wild pitch - we got a fast man in scoring position. The count is 2-1 to Eyster.

Eyster strikes out. His 3rd K for the game - he could've put the ball in play with Myers on 2B, and the game could be tied right now, but he's swinging for the walls these days.

Too many strike outs. This was a MAJOR goal to cut down on, by Coach Kingston during the off-season. Don't think they will reach it.

Mendham strikes out for the final out.

5th straight loss for the Gamecocks. The fall to 11-5 with the 3-2 loss to Vanderbilt.....

A pitcher like Rocker who can go 8 innings is always going to put you in a position to win most of the time and rest your bullpen.

Wish we had one of those, but we need good hitting, too.
