GAME 2

#25 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS (14-6, 2-2) VS #5 FLORIDA GATORS (16-6, 3-1)
4:00 P.M.  |  COLUMBIA, SC  |   FOUNDERS PARK

GAME DAY INFO | WATCH: WatchESPN | LISTEN: 107.5 The Game | Live Stats

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team returns to Founders Park Saturday for Game 2 of its series with 5th ranked Florida after winning a thrilling marathon Game 1 against the Gators 9-8 in 14 innings. Saturday's Game 2 first pitch will be at 4:00 PM and the game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. Every Gamecock contest will be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

The Gamecocks (14-6, 2-2) had 20 hits for the game to just 9 hits for the Gators (16-6, 3-1), but its pitching staff issued a season high 13 walks to even out the base-path runners for both teams. The game was tied at 7 runs in the bottom 8th inning on a RBI double from Braylen Wimmer, then the game went 5 straight inning of scoreless baseball until Florida hit a solo home run off of reliever Julian Bosnic to take the 8-7 lead in the top of the 14th inning.

The Gamecocks answered back, as Andrew Eyster blasted a solo home run of his own with two outs, and his 5th home run of the year, to tie the game back up to 8-all. But the Gamecocks weren't done yet: Jeff Heinrich followed Eyster's shot with a single, and Colin Burgess doubled to bat in Heinrich's game-winning run.

Despite the 13 walks, the Gamecocks also administered 19 strikeouts to the Gators on the evening. Bosnic (2-1) earned the win with 2.0 innings pitched, with just the lone solo home run, and 5 strikeouts with 0 walks. Wimmer, Eyster, and Burgess each went 4 for 7 - Wimmer hit 2 doubles and drove in 3 RBIs, Eyster had the home run and 2 RBIs, and Burgess had a double, scored two runs, and had the lone game-winning RBI.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Saturday
South Carolina Brannon Jordan (Sr. RHP) 1-2, 3.52 ERA, 16 BB, 38 SO
Florida Jack Leftwich (Jr., RHP) 4-0, 1.71 ERA, 9 BB, 29 SO

Watching Thomas Farr's outing last night, he had a bit of an unusual outing where he struggled with location, fell behind in pitch counts, and walked a lot of batters. He reminded me of......Brannon Jordan. Jordan takes the pitcher's mound today for the Gamecocks - he's had his own issues all season long with falling in pitch counts - typically not falling behind to say, 2-0 counts, but getting on top with 0-2 counts, then struggling to find that last, final strike to get out of the at-bat. So the counts end up going full, then taking a lot of pitches. Jordan can strike out opponents with the best of them, but he has had to throw all those pitches to do it, and also walks a lot of batters as well.

Opponents are not hitting Jordan very well - again - as last night showed us - you don't have to hit an opposing pitcher hard if he's gonna help you out by putting you onto the base-paths. But he struggles finding that pitch combination to get batters out in quick fashion. He's only allowed 12 total hits on the season to opposing batters, which is pretty decent, but 10 of those 12 hits are extra-base variety: Jordan leads the team with giving up the most doubles (6), and the most home runs (4). That's pretty bad.

As a result of this, Jordan's outings have rarely gotten TO the 5th inning, much less gotten far past the 5th. He's a 20+ pitch per inning guy. So our bullpen, which was taxed heavily in last night's 14th inning win, should expect to see a lot of action again tonight.

Of course, Brannon COULD just make a liar out of me, and throw a complete-game shut-out. I'd be OK with that......

1-0 Florida top 5th inning:

Looks like we're getting the good Brannon Jordan today, and he's out to make a liar of me, which is totally fine by me! Jordan has pitched through 4 innings, with only 1 walk which was intentional, and 5 strikeouts. He has thrown 59 pitches through 4.0 innings, which is solid if not great!

But our bats are not hitting today thus far. The Florida pitcher isn't walking us, but he's hitting us, which is the same thing only more painful. He's hit 4 Gamecocks batters in 4 innings, but only allowed 2 hits - both from our left-handed hitters Josiah Sightler and David Mendham.

So here we go: Jordan takes the hill. He gets a ground-out, a fly-out, and a strikeout to retire the side in order. It looks like he's settled in and is grooved.

Bottom 5th inning:

The top of the lineup up to bat for South Carolina. Brady Allen strikes out. Braylen Wimmer doubles to get things started. Sightler is walked.

Next up is Wesley Clarke - he was 0-6 yesterday in Game 1, and is 0-1 today with a walk. They don't decide to walk him here.

CLARKE SMASHES A HOME RUN OFF THE FIRST PITCH OFFERED UP!!! A 3-RBI BOMB! GAMECOCKS LEAD 3-1!!

I guess Wes was due! This is a HUGE turn-around of the game!!

Still only 1 out in the inning. Andrew Eyster is hit by a pitch - the 5th Gamecock hit today.

Mendham grounds out for Out #2. Eyster moves to 2B.

Jeff Heinrich is hit by a pitch. WOW.

A new Gator pitcher comes in from the bullpen. The starter was quite the painful experience for the Yardcocks.

Colin Burgess grounds out for the final out, but not before the Gamecocks take the lead!

3-1 Gamecocks, top 6th.....

3-1 South Carolina, top 6th inning:

Jordan still in there: he gets a fly-out, a strike-out, and a fly-out to retire the side in order 1-2-3. He's locked in!

bottom 6th inning:

George Callil strikes out. Allen grounds out. Wimmer strikes out. An un-eventful 6th inning all the way around.....

3-1 South Carolina, top 7th....

3-1 Gamecocks, top 7th inning:

Jordan still on the mound. The first Gator batter lines out. The next batter doubles to right field, but the next two batters fly out to leave him stranded. Jordan has 94 pitches on the day, through 7.0 innings.

bottom 7th inning:

Sightler strikes out. Clarke pops up for the 2nd out. Eyster grounds out to end the inning quietly.

3-1 Gamecocks, top 8th.....

3-1 Gamecocks, top 8th inning:

Brannon Jordan's day is done. He pitched fantastically, especially when a long outing from him was most needed after the long extra-inning game last night. He went 7.0 innings allowing only 1 earned run off of 5 hits, 1 intentional walk, 1 wild pitch, and 9 strikeouts! Great game, Brannon!!

Brett Kerry comes in for Jordan. Hmm.....I had expected him to perhaps be our Sunday starter, but now obviously not - he looks like he's in for a long save opportunity, which is his regular role.

Then, who?? Will it be Will Sanders, our regular mid-week starter?? He only pitched one single inning in last week's middle game, but this past Tuesday he had a solid outing. I guess we will have to see what develops tomorrow.

Kerry is ready. The first Florida batter flies out. The next strikes out. The next batter grounds out for the final out in the 8th for Florida. We are in solid control here.

3-1 Gamecocks, bottom 8th....

3-1 Yardcocks, bottom 8th inning:

A new pitcher for Florida comes in. Mendham reaches 1st safely on a fielding error by the Florida Shortstop.

Heinrich sacrifice bunts Mendham over to 2B, 1 out.

Now ANOTHER new pitcher for Florida comes in. That's OK, O'Sullivan - use 'em all up. We still have one more game to play in this series, and a sweep is right up our alley!!

Burgess singles!! Mendham stops at 3rd, and we have Gamecocks on the corners with only 1 out!

Callil flies out to left - a sacrifice fly-out that drives in Mendham, and the Gamecocks lead 4-1! Considering that Callil mostly strikes out, for him to get the bat on the ball and drive it deep to drive in an insurance run was big for him. 2 outs now, Allen flies out for the final out, but the Gamecocks extend their lead!

4-1 Yardcocks, top 9th......

4-1 Gamecocks, top 9th inning:

Kerry reclaims the mound. The first Gator batter strikes out swinging. Out #1

The next batter strikes out swinging. Out #2

The next batter flies out to center for the final out of the game!! Out #3!!

The Gamecocks beat the 5th-ranked Florida Gators 4-1 in Game 2 to take the series!! A HUGE win for the Gamecocks!!

Brannon Jordan (2-2) gets the win, Brett Kerry (2) gets the save.

Offensive player of the game was Wesley Clarke, who busted out of a hitting slump with just one hit, but it was a doozy - a 3 RBI Home Run - his 12th of the season - to put the Gamecocks in front to stay!!

This was a pretty good way to break out of the slump of last week. Hopefully, they can get the sweep tomorrow.

You had to figure we would need a pitcher to go the distance today after the 14-inning marathon last night.

Great win.

Hopefully we get the sweep tomorrow.
