GAME DAY INFO | WATCH: WatchESPN | LISTEN: 107.5 The Game | Live Stats

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Brannon Jordan struck out nine in seven innings of work and Wes Clarke belted a three-run home run as the University of South Carolina baseball team defeated Florida 4-1 Saturday afternoon (March 27) at Founders Park.

Jordan did not allow an earned run and only had one walk, which was intentional, in the seven frames to improve to 2-2 on the year. Brett Kerry earned his second save of the season, striking out three in two innings of relief.

Florida took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Kris Armstrong double that scored Sterlin Thompson. The game remained that way until the fifth. Braylen Wimmer doubled to left center with one out. Josiah Sightler then walked to bring up Clarke, who hit his 12th home run of the year, an opposite-field shot, to make it 3-1. Carolina added insurance in the eighth on a George Callil sacrifice fly to left to score David Mendham.

Carolina and Florida conclude the three-game set Sunday afternoon (March 28) at noon at Founders Park. The game will be televised on SEC Network with Clay Matvick and Ben McDonald on the call. The game will also be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

  • Carolina now has clinched a series win over Florida, its first since 2011 and first at home since 2008.
  • Clarke now has 26 RBI after 21 games.
  • Wimmer is hitting .391 in five conference games this season.
  • Jordan has 47 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched this year.

In the post-game presser, Coach Kingston was asked what the plans were for the Sunday starter, and he said he and the staff were still figuring that out, so he's keeping that one still close to vest, and I guess we won't know who it will be until an hour or so before first pitch when they announce the starting lineup....

Should be an interesting choice.

It's Sanders:

After Kerry and Sanders as choices, it would have been a total surprise - someone who hasn't been getting much action, like Tringali. We'll see if Sanders will be on a limited pitch count today....

Top 2nd Inning, no score:

Back-to-back fly outs get us to 2 outs, then the next Gator batter smacks a solo home run to right. Sanders gets the final out on a strikeout, but Florida leads.

1-0 Florida, bottom 2nd inning:

Wes Clarke, Andrew Eyster, and Jeff Heinrich up to bat next.

CLARKE HOMERS TO RIGHT! The game is tied! It's Wes' 13th home run of the season. Perhaps he's starting to come out of his funk??

EYSTER FOLLOWS CLARKE WITH ANOTHER HOME RUN TO RIGHT!! The Gamecocks take the lead 2-1, and there's still 0 outs.

Heinrich grounds out. Brennan Milone grounds out.

COLIN BURGESS HOMERS TO RIGHT!! The hot bats are back!!

George Callil strikes out to end the onslaught, but the Gamecocks take the 3-1 lead!

3-1 Gamecocks, top 3rd....

3-1 Gamecocks top 3rd inning:

Will Sanders takes the mound for the 3rd. The lead-off batter fouls out to Heinrich at 3rd. The next batter strikes out swinging. The next batter strikes out swinging. Looks like Sanders has no problems being a weekend starter.

3-1 Gamecocks bottom 3rd inning:

Top of the order for South Carolina is up with Brady Allen leading off. Allen takes two straight balls, then ALLEN HOMERS TO RIGHT OFF THE A FAT ONE DOWN THE MIDDLE!!! WOW! Everyone is getting home runs for the Gamecocks today! Lets get some guys on the base-paths first, and put up some crooked numbers on the scoreboard!

Braylen Wimmer strikes out. Josiah Sightler pops up and out to the Shortstop.

Clarke is back up there again real quick. He's hit by the pitch - feeble retaliation from the pitcher for smacking him out of the ball park. Eyster singles, and we have Gamecocks on 2B and 1B, with 2 outs.

Heinrich strikes out to end the Gamecock threat.

4-1 Gamecocks top 4th...

4-1 Yardcocks, top 4th inning:

Sanders back out to command the Gamecocks Battery. He's thrown 40 pitches through 3.0 innings.

The lead-off batter strikes out. The next batter reaches on a fielding error by Clarke at 1B.

The next batter hits a 2-RBI home run. Yikes!

Sanders strikes out the next batter in 3 pitches for the 2nd out. The next batter grounds out for the final out, but Florida creeps closer.

4-3 Yardcocks, bottom 4th inning:

Milone strikes out. Burgess pops out. Callil flies out. Quick inning.

4-3 Yardcocks, top 5th.......

4-3 Gamecocks, top 5th inning:

Will Sanders' day is done - Julian Bosnic comes in to relieve him. Sanders threw 59 pitches over 4.0 innings - he allowed 2 hits - both home runs - with 3 runs scores (2 earned), with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Bosnic takes the mound ready. He gets the first FLorida batter to ground out. The next batter strikes out. The next batter singles, but the next batter grounds out for the 3rd out.

Bottom 5th inning:

Top of the order for the Gamecocks. Allen singles. Wimmer flies out. Allen steals 2B during the Sightler at-bat. Sightler flies out.

Clarke grounds out for the final out.

4-3 Gamecocks, top 6th.......

4-3 Gamecocks top 6th inning:

Bosnic strikes out the first two batters, then gets a pop-up out on the last of the inning for Florida.

bottom 6th inning:

A new pitcher for Florida comes in. Eyster, Heinrich, and Milone up next.

Eyster is hit by a pitch. Heinrich lays down a sac bunt to move Eyster to 2B. 1 out.

Milone is walked. Burgess flies out for Out #2.

Callil is up next. Oh well. WHAT!?!? CALLIL 2-RBI DOUBLES TO LEFT CENTER, SCORING EYSTER AND MILONE!!!

That's like a home run for ol' George! Way to go young man!

Still 2 outs, Callil on 2B, Allen steps up at the top of the lineup. This Gamecock team looks rejuvenated after that long 6-game losing slump.

ALLEN HOMERS TO CENTER FOR HIS 2ND HOME RUN OF THE GAME!!! A 2-RBI blast!!

Wimmer tries to catch the pitcher while he's reeling, and lays down a bunt attempt for a single, but it falls short and the catcher throws him out for the 3rd out. But the Gamecocks are rolling now!!

:cockybaseball: :cockybaseball: :cockybaseball: :cockybaseball:

8-3 Gamecocks, top 7th.....

8-3 Gamecocks, top 8th inning:

Brett Kerry comes in for Bosnic. Julian pitched strongly: 3.0 innings allowing only 1 hit, with 5 Ks and 0 walks.

Kerry is ready. He gets the lead-off Gator batter to ground out. He walks the next batter, who advances on a wild pitch to the 3rd Gator batter. That batter singles, and there are Gators on the corners with 1 out.

The next batter strikes out for the 2nd out. The next batter doubles to score 2 runs. The next batter strikes out for the final out, but Florida adds 2 more runs.

8-5 Gamecocks, bottom 8th.....

8-5 Gamecocks bottom 8th inning:

Another new pitcher for Florida comes in. Milone pops out. Burgess flies out. Callil is hit by a pitch - Florida may get swept here, but they won't be leaving without a pound of Gamecock flesh.

Allen grounds out for the final out. Now it's Kerry Time!

8-5 Gamecocks, top 9th inning......

8-5 Gamecocks, top 9th inning:

Kerry steps up. He gets the lead-off batter to fly out. The next batter strikes out swinging. The next batter singles, but the next batter flies out to right field for the 3rd and final out of the game.

Gamecocks win 8-5 and sweep the 5th-ranked Florida Gators! The Gamecocks are now 16-6 and 4-2 in SEC play. Going 4-2 after facing Vanderbilt and Florida is not too shabby, and helps our position for conference standings as the SEC season progresses. This is a very tough conference, and whoever finishes with an above-.500 conference record may just win the conference title......
