ATHENS, GA. – The University of South Carolina baseball team fell, 5-3, to Georgia Friday night (April 2) in Game 1 of their series with the Bulldogs at Foley Field. The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the seventh to take the lead and added an insurance run in the eighth frame which sealed the outcome. Game 2 will take place Saturday at 2:00 PM - the game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. As with all games, Saturday's contest will be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Saturday
South Carolina Brannon Jordan (Sr. RHP) 2-2, 2.70 ERA, 17 BB, 47 SO
Georgia Ryan Webb (Sr., LHP) 2-0, 1.59 ERA, 10 BB, 34 SO

Carolina took a 3-0 lead in the fourth as Josiah Sightler walked, Wes Clarke was hit by a pitch and David Mendham belted an opposite-field three-run home run, his second of the season. Georgia got a run back in the fourth, then scored a run in the sixth.

Riley King had a two-run single in the seventh to take the lead for the Bulldogs. A fielding error scored a run in the eighth for Georgia for the final 5-3 count.

Thomas Farr struck out seven for the Gamecocks in a 5.2 inning start. He allowed six hits and two runs with no walks. The loss went to Andrew Peters, who allowed a run 1.2 innings of relief.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Farr now has 52 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched.
  • The Gamecocks had five hits on the day and three RBI, all off Mendham's home run.
  • Carolina's six-game winning streak was snapped in Friday's game. Carolina is now 17-7 overall and 4-3 in the SEC.
  • Carolina's pitching had 11 strikeouts on the night.

The records of both teams are essentially even.

Hard to say how it will shake down, but we should be able to get one or two wins out of the series.

The South Carolina Gamecocks exploded to even the series 1-1 on Saturday by blasting the UGA Bulldogs 13-7.

The Bulldogs (18-8, 3-5) struck first with a solo home run off of Brannon Jordan in the bottom 2nd inning. The Gamecocks (18-8, 5-3) would respond in the top of the 3rd, with a walk to Brennan Milone who was walked to lead off the inning, and then a 2-run home run from George Callil, his 2nd on the season. The Gamecocks would follow that up in the top of the 4th inning, with a single from Wes Clarke and a 2-run Homer from Andrew Eyster, his 6th on the season.

The Gamecocks would extend their lead to 5-1 with a solo lead-off home run from Josiah Sightler - his 3rd in 2021 - in the top of the 6th inning, and then extend it again to 7-1 on a double from David Mendham, a long single to center from Milone that scores Mendham, and after Milone advances to 2B on the late throw to home to get Mendham, an error from the UGA catcher to 2B goes back into the outfield, allowing Milone to scamper all the way home for the unearned run.

Then the Gamecocks' run parade continues in the 7th inning, as Callil doubles and then advances to 3rd on a wild pitch. 1 out later, Braylen Wimmer hits a sacrifice fly out to right field that scores Callil, and it's 8-1 Gamecocks.

Finally Jordan begins to tire out: in the bottom 7th, he walks the lead-off UGA batter. 1 out later, the next batter also walks. 2 outs later, Jordan hits the next batter to load the bases. He then walks the next batter to force in the run for UGA, and it's 8-2 USC.

That's it for Brannon, and Brett Kerry comes in. The first batter he faces hits a 2-RBI single. The next batter reaches safely on an errant throw from Milone at 3B, and another run scores. The next batter is walked to load the bases up again - this is all with 2 outs. With the bases loaded again, the next UGA batter singles in another run. Finally Kerry gets out of the inning with the final out on a ground-out to Callil at Short. But the score is now 8-6 Gamecocks, and UGA is back in the game with the 5-run inning.

The Gamecocks come right back at UGA in the top of the 8th inning: Clarke leads off with a single, and Eyster is walked. Mendham is safe at 1st on a fielder's choice as they get Clarke out at 3rd. With 1 out, Milone doubled scoring Eyster, and now they are on 3B and 2B with 1 out. Now with 2 outs, Callil is walked to load the bases and Brady Allen singles to drive in 2 runs, and the Gamecocks now lead 11-6. The Bulldogs score their final run of the game on a lead-off home run off of Kerry.

The Gamecocks weren't finished, however. In the top of the 9th, Sightler singles to lead off, and then Clarke hits his 15th home run of the season, a 2-RBI bomb to close out the scoring. All told the Gamecocks hit four home runs in the game.

Jordan (3-2) pitched 6.2 innings allowing only one single hit - the solo home run in the 2nd inning. But he walked 3 batters - all in the 7th inning - and he gave up 5 runs (4 earned), while striking out 11. It was truly a masterful game for Brannon right up until the 7th inning.

The series-deciding Game 3 will kick off at 1:00 pm tomorrow.....

Another great win that breaks a losing streak with UGA.

One interesting tidbit during the game was when Derek said UGA is unorthodox because Game 1 is usually the bullpen game for them.

So no bullpen game from UGA for tomorrow's game.

That makes sense, because they didn't stay with their starter for very long, and that's unusual for Friday starters. Then after that, they pretty much went a new pitcher every new inning.....

I also think it would tend to create a favorable pitching mismatch in Game 3.

Maybe also let your better pitchers work batting practice during the week if your hitters were struggling with curve and breaking-ball pitches or you were anticipating a series with an opponent like Vandy with really good pitchers.  Then they have enough time to rest their arms before Games 2 and 3.

UGA's record says it works pretty good, I guess.
