COLUMBIA  – Missouri scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings as the Tigers defeated the University of South Carolina baseball team, 7-2, Friday night (April 9) in the opener of a three-game SEC series at Founders Park. Carolina and Missouri continue its three-game set on Saturday, April 10 with a noon first pitch. This is a change from the original schedule due to the threat of potential weather in the late afternoon in the Midlands. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus, and will be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION

The Gamecocks got out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a Brady Allen RBI single. Jack Mahoney scored on a wild pitch for the game's second run. Missouri then scored three in the fifth on a three-run double from Garrett Rice. Then in the sixth, a Brandt Belk RBI double and a throwing error that scored a pair gave Missouri a 6-2 lead. The Tigers ended the scoring in the eighth on a double play that scored a run.

Allen had two of Carolina's five hits on the night. The loss on the mound went to Thomas Farr, who allowed four hits and three runs with nine strikeouts and five walks.

Yardcocks bounce back from yesterday's loss with an 11-1 victory over Mizzou.

:slugger-1:

Brannon Jordan (4-2) gets the win, and Daniel Lloyd gets a save - his first - out of the 11-1 win.

The big inning was the 6th, which saw 6 runs score for the Gamecocks.

All 6 runs of which scored without the benefit of a single hit, which is impressive - the Missouri starter loaded the bases with a lead-off single to Wes Clarke, a hit by pitch to Andrew Eyster, and after a ground-out from David Mendham, a walk to Colin Burgess. Then the fun starts.

The reliever comes in for the starter for Mizzou, inheriting the loaded bases and 1 out. He walks Brennan Milone - Run #1. He walks George Callil - Run #2.

That's it for him, and another pitcher comes in for the Tigers. He walks Brady Allen - Run #3. Then a wild pitch to Braylen Wimmer advances everyone, and another run scores - Run #4. Then a sacrifice fly from Wimmer results in the 2nd out, but drives in Callil - Run #5. Allen advances to 3B on the fly out.

Finally there's just Allen alone on 3rd, but ANOTHER wild pitch thrown to Josiah Sightler scores Allen for Run #6. Sightler would fly out to center for the final out of the inning.

Jordan pitched 5.0 innings allowing 2 just hits - 4 walks (he still walks a lot of batters), 8 strikeouts and 2 wild pitches of his own, but allowed just 1 earned run which matters the most.

Lloyd relieved Jordan in the top 6th inning, and pitched the final 4.0 innings of baseball for South Carolina. The score was 3-1 when he came in, so it was like a really looong save opportunity, even though the Gamecocks would add 8 more runs in those 4 innings he pitched, so that's how he got the save. Lloyd gave up 4 hits of scoreless baseball, with 2 Ks and 0 walks.

The score was 3-1 when Lloyd came in due to the bat of Brady Allen in the 5th inning: Burgess and Callil singled around a Milone fly-out, bringing up the top of the lineup and Allen. Allen cleans the bases with a 3-RBI home run, the 9th home run of the season for the Gamecocks lead-off hitter.

The final 2 runs for South Carolina came in the 8th inning - a lead-off double from Milone, and a 1-out intentional walk to Allen set the stage. After another relief pitcher came in for Missouri, Wimmer singles scoring Milone, and after Allen had moved to 3B on the play Sightler hits a RBI ground-out to 2nd that scores Allen.

So the Gamecocks (20-9, 7-4) are in good position to win the series tomorrow at 12:00 PM.....
