SCOUTING THE CITADEL
The Bulldogs were swept by UNC Greensboro this past weekend. Ryan McCarthy leads The Citadel with a .313 batting average and seven home runs. Noah Mitchell is tied for the team lead with McCarthy with 11 doubles. On the mound, Jake Pilarski has a 2-1 record with 65 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched.

SERIES VS. THE CITADEL
The two teams will meet for the third time this season on the diamond. Carolina won in Charleston, 11-7, on March 10 as Josiah Sightler drove in four runs in the victory. The Gamecocks then won 8-3 on March 23 as Will Sanders struck out 10 batters and Wes Clarke homered and drove in a pair of runs.

LATE RALLY LIFTS CAROLINA PAST NUMBER ONE
The Gamecocks scored four runs in the sixth and two in the eighth in overcoming a 2-0 deficit in a 6-2 win over No. 1 Arkansas on April 23. Colin Burgess drove in a pair of runs in the win and George Callil had a big RBI single in the sixth inning. Andrew Peters struck out three in three hitless innings and Brett Kerry picked up a save with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. It's the first win over a number one team since Carolina beat Florida in 2016.

ALLEN RANKS IN SEC PLAY
Brady Allen is hitting .295 with 14 runs scored, four doubles, seven home runs and 18 RBI after 18 conference games. He is tied for fourth in the conference in home runs, tied for fourth with five stolen bases, fifth with 48 total bases and tied for eighth in RBI.

9-0 Gamecocks top 9th inning:

It's been all Gamecocks tonight. Jackson Phipps is in for Jack Mahoney.

Connor CIno comes in to Catcher for Wes Clarke, who moves to 1st. Brandon Fields to CF for Brady Allen. Jeff Heinrich to 2B for Braylen Wimmer. Michael Robinson to 3B for Brennan Milone.

Phipps gets the lead-off Citadel batter to ground out. He walks the next batter. The next batter strikes out.

The next Citadel Bulldogs batter hits a 2-RBI home run to right center, and the Bulldogs are finally on the scoreboard.

The next batter singles, and the Citadel bats have come alive. The next batter is hit by pitch, and this isn't funny anymore.

The next batter hits a 3-RBI home run, and Jackson is suddenly scuffling. This score is getting too close now!!

The next batter grounds out to George Callil at Shortstop for the final out, and this game ends!

5 quick runs scored by the Citadel in the 9th inning to let the Gamecocks know that they were there, but the Gamecocks win 9-5.....

Another great outing for Jack Mahoney, who earns the win (3-0) - he pitched 7.2 innings, allowing 5 base hits, no runs, with 6 strikeouts and only 1 walk. Through 32.2 innings pitched thus far this season, he has a 1.10 ERA.

Mahoney along with Will Sanders are two freshmen pitchers that will be strong for the Gamecocks over the next 2 seasons at least.

For the offense, overall the team had 3 home runs, 4 doubles, and 12 hits altogether. The player of the game without question was little-used Noah Myers, who got the start in left field tonight. Coming into this game, Myers was 1 for 11 (0.91) with 5 strikeouts. Noah was 1 for 4 tonight, but the 1 was a doozy: a Grand Slam Home Run in the 4th inning that pushed South Carolina's lead to 6-0.

The other home runs for the game came from Braylen Wimmer in the 2nd inning to get the scoring started - a 1-out 2-RBI homer after Wes Clarke led off with a walk. Wimmer would also double in Clarke for his 3rd RBI of the game in the 7th inning, to put the Gamecocks up 7-0: Braylen was 2 for 4 for the game.

The final home run came from Brady Allen in the 8th inning - it too was a 1-out 2-RBI smash with George Callil on base after being walked to lead off the inning. Allen was 4 for 5 for the game, and leads the team with a .320 batting average, currently the ONLY regular in the lineup with a .300+ average.

Wes Clarke used to lead the team in batting, but has been mired in a huge hitting slump in recent weeks. Teams have found out Clarke's cold spot in his zone - Clarke pulls too much on his swings: he (I think) got a little too power drunk off of his early-season home run binge, and opposing pitching adjusted, and he hasn't quite been able to adjust to their adjustments yet. They pitch him wide to outside, and he has struggled to hit to the opposite field.

But tonight the Citadel didn't bring the book on Wes with them to Founders Park - Clarke went 3 for 3 in the game with 2 walks, with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Both of his doubles were pulled down the left-field line, and his single was up the middle. So the Bulldogs pitchers gave him enough ball that he didn't HAVE to adjust too much on his swing...
