SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
The Ospreys are coming off dropping 2-of-3 games against Florida Gulf Coast this past weekend. UNF did take the series finale, 7-3, in 10 innings on Sunday. Cade Westbrook had three hits and drove in four in the win. Alex Kachler leads the Ospreys with a .379 batting average to go along with 10 doubles and six home runs. On the mound, Brandon Reitz has five saves and a 2.61 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched.

WIMMER DOUBLES THE FUN

Top of the 1st, Jack Mahoney is already in some trouble. Back-to-back singles and a walk loads the bases with 0 outs. The next batter flies out for the first out, but a run scores from 3B. The next batter singles, and the bases are juiced again with 1 out.

The next batter reaches on a fielder's choice - the base-runner advancing to 2B is thrown out, but another run scores. Ospreys on the corners with 2 outs.

That's it for Mahoney - easily his worst outing of the season. John Gilreath comes in out of the bullpen.

Gilreath gets the next Osprey batter to ground out for the final out, but North Florida strikes first....

2-0 North Florida, bottom 1st......

2-0 North Florida, bottom 1st inning:

With the new Gamecocks lineup, Braylen Wimmer leads off the bottom 1st.

He responds with a solo home run to straight center!! He gets one of those runs back. For a brief period, the Osprey starting pitcher has a 10.00+ ERA on the season.

Colin Burgess strikes out. Brady Allen is walked. Wes Clarke homers to left center!! A 2-RBI blast, and the Gamecocks take the lead! It's still just the 1st inning with 1 out - will the entire game be like this? It may be a 5-hour game.

Andrew Eyster is walked. David Mendham hits into a fielder's choice with Eyster out at 2B. Joe Satterfield grounds out for the 2nd out, but the Gamecocks have the lead.

3-2 South Carolina, top 2nd........

3-2 South Carolina bottom 2nd inning:

George Callil leads off with a walk, and a new pitcher comes in for North Florida.

Noah Myers singles to center. Wimmer strikes out. Callil and Myers double steals, and they are now on 3B and 2B respectively.

Burgess singles to center field, and both Callil and Myers score!!

Allen strikes out. Clarke doubles and there's Gamecocks on 3B and 2B with 2 outs, but Eyster strikes out to end the threat.

5-2 South Carolina, top 3rd........

5-2 Gamecocks, top 4th inning:

A double play ends the top 3rd inning in Gilreath's favor, the 2nd such double play in a row. In the bottom 3rd, the Gamecocks were retired in order.

In the top 4th, Gilreath takes the mound. He gives up a single to the lead-off North Florida batter. While pitching to the next batter, the base-runner attempts to steal 2B. Burgess throws wide of the bag, and he moves up to 3B on the error.

The next batter is walked. The next batter singles to left scoring a run.

Daniel Lloyd relieves Gilreath. He inherits men on 2B and 1B with 0 outs.

The first batter Lloyd faces grounds out on a sacrifice bunt, but he moves the base-runners up to 3B and 2B, with 1 out.

The next batter is walked loading the bases. The next batter hits a RBI single, and the Ospreys are moving closer - 5-4 now, with bases still loaded and only 1 out.

The next batter strikes out. That's a huge out if Lloyd can capitalize here.

He doesn't. Another single - this time a 2-RBI variety - and the Osprey's reclaim the lead.

The next batter is thrown out for the final out, but the Ospreys score 4 runs that inning off of 4 hits, 2 walks, and an error....

6-5 North Florida, bottom 4th.......

6-5 North Florida top 7th inning:

The Gamecocks got 2 hits in the bottom 1st, and 3 hits in the bottom 2nd. They have gone hit-less since....

Magdiel Cotto comes in for Lloyd. He retires the Ospreys in order, with a strikeout added.

In the bottom 7th, Allen, Clarke, and Eyster are the Gamecocks up to bat.

Allen strikes out. Clarke singles. Eyster singles - we have men on 2B and 1B, with 1 out.

Mendham strikes out. Brennan Milone pinch hits for Satterfield. North Florida goes to the bullpen. So in that case, Connor Cino pinch hits for Milone. Take that, North Florida...

Cino reaches on catcher's interference, on a 0-2 count. The bases are loaded with Gamecocks, but there are 2 outs.

George Callil hits a 2-RBI single into center field, scoring Clarke and Eyster!! The Gamecocks reclaim the lead!!

Still Gamecocks on 2B and 1B, 2 outs. Myers strikes out for Out #3.

7-6 Gamecocks, top 8th.....

7-6 Gamecocks top 8th inning:

Michael Robinson takes over at 3B for Cino.

Cotto takes the mound. He retires the side in order 1-2-3. That's good.

Bottom 8th inning:

A new pitcher comes in for the Ospreys.

Wimmer leads off with a single. Burgess hits into a double play. Allen flied out.

7-6 Gamecocks top 9th......

7-6 Gamecocks, top 9th inning:

Julian Bosnic comes in for Cotto. He induces the lead-off Osprey batter to fly out. The next batter flies out. The next batter strikes out for the final out!

For much of the game North Florida out-hit us, out-pitched us, and out-defended us, but we steal the game in the end, which matters.

The Gamecocks win 7-6.......

In Coach Mark Kingston's post-game presser, he said that starter Jack Mahoney experienced some tightness in his forearm, which was why he only pitched 0.2 innings today. Hopefully its nothing more than muscle tightness, and he'll be ready to go the next mid-week game, which I believe is the 3rd and final game against Clemson....

I know losing Mahoney so early in the game hurt, but that was much closer than it should have been.
