SCOUTING KENTUCKY
The Wildcats won the series opener against Florida before dropping the next two games to the Gators. Kentucky's midweek game against Morehead State was cancelled. The Wildcats are led by Coltyn Kessler's .374 batting average. T.J. Collett has 15 home runs and 47 RBI. On the mound, Cole Stupp is the Friday starter with a 4-4 record and 58 strikeouts in 64.2 innings pitched.

SERIES VS. CLEMSON
Carolina holds a 54-42 series record over the Wildcats and won 2-of-3 games in 2019 in Columbia, the last time the two teams met. Wes Clarke hit his first career home run in the 11-3 win on May 11, 2019, while Brett Kerry struck out five in three innings of relief. The last time the two teams met in Lexington, Kentucky won 2-of-3 games. Carolina won the middle game, 15-1, behind three hits and five RBI from Hunter Taylor.

RPI UPDATE
The Gamecocks come in at No. 15 in the latest RPI with the No. 8 strength of schedule. Carolina has played 12 games against top-10 RPI teams and still have three games against No. 8 Tennessee on the schedule. Carolina has eight wins against top-25 teams in the RPI and is 16-3 against teams that are 51 and above. The NCAA will announce 20 sites that will be in the running as hosts sites for the NCAA Tournament before the Kentucky series starts.

SEC STANDINGS UPDATE
Carolina currently is in fourth in the SEC East Division and seventh overall heading into this weekend's series at Kentucky. The Gamecocks' 12-12 record is two games back of No. 6 Ole Miss while Carolina is a half-game ahead of Alabama and a full game ahead of both Georgia and Kentucky for seventh place.

MENDHAM WALKS OFF BULLDOGS
David Mendham's RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Jeff Heinrich and gave Carolina a 4-3 win over Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon (May 9). Mendham, who also hit a 2-run home run in the second inning, belted the double to the gap in left field that scored Heinrich, who singled with one out in the frame. Carolina now has four walk-off wins, three coming at Founders Park.

KERRY TAMES BULLDOGS AGAIN
Brett Kerry pitched six innings against Mississippi State on May 9, allowing just four hits and a run with six strikeouts, keeping Carolina in a game that it eventually won, 4-3, in 11 innings. Kerry also pitched against Mississippi State in 2019 in a 10-8 win. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five hits with two runs and four strikeouts to earn the win.

On its own, I had been thinking we needed a shake-up in the starting pitching line-up to see if that might help things for us.

Let's see if Kerry can keep it rollin' in Game 2 this weekend.

Gamecocks jump on the Wildcats to start the game. Two straight singles by Brady Allen and Andrew Eyster, and then a wild pitch puts them on 3B and 2B with 0 outs.

Wes Clarke then singles scoring Allen. David Mendham strikes out for the 1st out, but Josiah Sightler singles scoring Eyster.

Colin Burgess strikes out for the 2nd out, but then Braylen Wimmer triples scoring both Clarke and Sightler for the scoring in the 1st inning.

4-0 Gamecocks, top 2nd.....

Brannon Jordan is holding his own, but it won't last. He has 3 Ks and 3 walks, and over 40 pitches in less than 2 innings pitched. He just struggles with pitch counts and going to full count with every opposing batter. Hope he lasts as long as possible.....

4-0 Gamecocks bottom 3rd inning:

A lead-off single, a 2-out walk, then a 2-out 2-RBI double cuts the Gamecocks' lead in half.

Another RBI double, and Jordan is struggling badly. He gets the final out on a fly out.

4-3 Gamecocks, top 4th......

In the top 4th inning, Gamecocks lead off with a single from Brennan Milone, and a walk from George Callil. Allen then singles in Milone for another run. Eyster strikes out, but Clarke is walked to load the bases. Mendham flies out for the 2nd out, but he scores Callil. Then Sightler hits a ground-rule double to score Allen. Burgess grounds out for the final out of the inning, but the Gamecocks match the Wildcats and add 3 more runs to their total....

7-3 Gamecocks bottom 4th....

7-3 top 5th inning:

A new pitcher for the Wildcats. Wimmer doubles down the right field line and Milone is walked. Good start to the inning.

Callil bunts back to the pitcher a little too hard - he gets it and throws out Wimmer at 3B on the fielder's choice. Now there's Gamecocks on 2B and 1B with 1 out.

The pitcher gives it back with a wild pitch that moves the runners to 3B and 2B.

And then another wild pitch that scores Milone!! Callil moves up to 3B.

Allen is walked, and that's it for that Wildcat pitcher. Gamecocks on the corners and still only 1 out in the inning.....

8-3 Gamecocks.....

That pitcher also unleashes a wild pitch - the 3rd one around a walk - that scores Callil, Allen moves up to 2B. Then Allen steals 3B as the pitcher focuses on throwing strikes to Eyster.

The Kentucky pitcher fails, and walks Eyster. Clarke grounds out to 3rd, but scores Allen. Eyster moves up to 2B. Three runs have scored for the Gamecocks this inning on just one single hit - and that hit by Wimmer leading off had nothing to do with any of the runs.

Mendham strikes out to end the fun, but the Gamecocks extend their lead to 10-3 into the bottom 5th.....

10-3 Gamecocks bottom 5th inning:

Jordan is still in the game. He's thrown 89 pitches through 4.0 innings. He strikes out the leading batter for Kentucky. The next batter strikes out. The next batter strikes out for the final out. Sit 'em down 1-2-3. Jordan now has 106 pitches through 5.0 innings, but he's now in line for the win.....

10-3 top 6th.......

Daniel Lloyd comes in the bottom 6th for Jordan. He gives up one single around retiring the side.

10-3 Gamecocks top 7th......

Allen singles to lead off. Eyster flies out. Clarke is walked on 4 pitches.

Mendham is walked to load the bases with 1 out. Noah Myers bunts to the pitcher, again too hard and fast: he throws out Allen at home. This is the 3rd bunt attempt that's gone back to the pitcher, and he's handled it every time. Burgess strikes out for the final out to kill the chance at more runs.

10-3 Gamecocks, bottom 7th.....

The Gamecocks scored 2 more runs - one each in the 8th and 9th innings. In the 8th, 3 walks and a hit by pitch pushes in a run without the benefit of a hit. But a hit was definitely got in the top of the 9th inning, as Braylen Wimmer smacks a 2-out solo homerun. That concludes the scoring for the game as the Gamecocks secure Game 1 of the series with the 12-6 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Starter Brannon Jordan (5-4) gets the win with 5.0 innings pitched, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs - all earned - with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks. Julian Bosnic picks up the save, his 3rd on the season.

Braylen Wimmer led the way on offense, going 3 for 6, with a single shy of the cycle, with a double, a triple, and a solo home run, his 9th of the season and the only one for the game for the Gamecocks. He drove in 3 runs to tie for the game's lead.

Josiah Sightler went 3 for 3 on the game, with a double, 2 RBIs and a run scored. Brady Allen went 3 for 4 with a RBI and 3 runs scored. And Wes Clarke was 1 for 3 with 3 walks, and 3 RBIs.....

I turned the game off in the bottom of the 7th right when Peters came in for Lloyd and went to bed, but my sense was that Kingston wasn't going to leave Peters in for long because he needed him the rest of the weekend with Kerry now unavailable as a reliever.

It will be great if Thomas Farr can pick up a Game 3 win to make up for his Game 1 losses due to poor hitting.
