LEXINGTON, KY.  – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-6 win over Kentucky Friday night (May 14) at Kentucky Proud Park. South Carolina and Kentucky continue their three-game series on Saturday afternoon (May 15) at 2 p.m. at Kentucky Proud Park. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. All three games will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. Every Gamecock contest will be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

Kentucky Sean Harney (Sr. RHP) 3-0, 3.72 ERA, 9 BB, 46 SO

Carolina scored four runs on five hits in the first, highlighted by Braylen Wimmer's triple to right. Kentucky bounced back with three in the third, but Carolina answered with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Kentucky plated three in the seventh but Carolina added insurance with single runs in the eighth and ninth, the latter on a Wimmer home run.
 
Wimmer, Brady Allen and Josiah Sightler had three hits apiece in the win. Allen was 3-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored. Sightler drove in a pair and Wes Clarke had three RBI in the victory.
 
Brannon Jordan picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out six and allowing five hits and three runs in five innings. Julian Bosnic earned his third save with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • The 12 runs are the most by Carolina since the Gamecocks scored 13 in a Sunday win over Missouri.
  • Carolina's three stolen bases tie a season high.
  • The Gamecocks move to 13-12 in SEC play after tonight's win.

Gamecocks open Game 2 in strong fashion as they did with Game 1:

Brady Allen was walked, and Andrew Eyster singles to right! Then Wes Clarke strikes out, but both Allen and Eyster steal 3B and 2B respectively! Gamecocks in scoring position, with only 1 out.

Josiah Sightler grounds out to the Shortstop, but but the Gamecock base-runners were running - Allen scores, and Eyster reaches 2rd safely on the late throw to home!

David Mendham is thrown out at 1st, but the Gamecocks take the lead to open the game.

In the bottom 1st, Brett Kerry takes the mound - he retires the side in order with a ground-out, foul-out, and pop-out.

1-0 South Carolina, top 2nd......

 
1-0 Gamecocks top 4th inning.

Brett Kerry is pitching very well thus far. Mendham leads off with a single. Braylen Wimmer strikes out. Brennan Milone is hit by a pitch. They challenge the call, and it's reviewed and overturned. Milone then strikes out.

Burgess is then hit by a pitch, and THIS one stands. But George Callil grounds out for the final out.

1-0 bottom 4th.....

 
1-0 Gamecocks bottom 4th inning:

Kerry only gives up one hit - it was Kentucky's first hit of the game - but retires the side with no fuss.

Top 5th inning:

Allen grounds out to lead off. Eyster and Clarke are both walked. Sightler is hit by a pitch, and the bases are loaded with only 1 out.

Mendham grounds out to 2B, but Eyster scores and the runners move up to 3B and 2B, with 2 outs now.

2-0 Gamecocks, and the Wildcats go to their bullpen.....

Wimmer grounds out for the final out, but the Gamecocks add to their lead.

2-0 Gamecocks, bottom 5th.....

2-0 South Carolina top 6th inning:

Milone and Burgess single to lead off putting two Yardcocks on base with 0 outs. We seem to be getting to their pitchers more as the game goes along.

Callil pops up. The top of the hitting order comes up now with 1 out.

Allen is walked to load the bases. We got something brewing here.

Eyster HITS THE GRAND SLAM HOME RUN!!!! 6-0 Gamecocks now!

6-0 Yardcocks top 8th inning:

Kerry has only pitched 73 pitches through 7.0 innings. Normally he'd be rolling along, but I don't know how long they'll keep him in, being he's been a bullpen pitcher for most of the season. He's been long relief at times, but still doubt they'll let him get to 100 pitches, but who knows.

 
In the top 8th inning, Burgess and Callil were both walked to lead off. We've not gotten a lot of hits in this game, but the UK pitching hasn't given us much chance to with all the walks.

A new pitcher comes in for the Wildcats.

Allen flies out for the first out. Eyster hits a RBI single to 2B, scoring Burgess!

Both Callil and Eyster advance to 3B and 2B with a wild pitch to Clarke. Clarke is intentionally walked to load the bases up.

Noah Myers hits into a double play to kill off the threat, but the Gamecocks add another run to their lead.

7-0 Gamecocks, bottom 8th.....

 
7-0 Gamecocks top 9th inning:

Kerry has pitched a masterful game. He's thrown 86 pitches through 8.0 innings.

To lead off the 9th, Joe Satterfield is hit by a pitch. Wimmer hits a 2-RBI home run to left center, driving in Satterfield!!

Milone strikes out and Burgess flies out.

A new Wildcat pitcher comes in.

Callil strikes out for the final out.

Kerry is going to finish this game out. He induces the lead-off batter to ground out to 2B. The next batter strikes out swinging. The next batter flies out to Allen in center field. Three up and three down!

The South Carolina Gamecocks win Game 2 and the series over the Kentucky Wildcats 9-0 in convincing fashion!!

Brett Kerry (4-1) was the pitcher of the game - going 9.0 innings (94 total pitches) allowing 4 hits, with 0 runs, 0 walks, and 10 strikeouts.

The player of the game was clearly Andrew Eyster: he was 3 for 3, with a walk and 5 RBIs. The big hit of his three was a grand slam home run in the 6th inning.

Overall the Gamecocks only had 7 hits for their 9 runs. They were also walked 7 times, and hit with pitches 5 times, to keep the bases juiced with Gamecocks all game long.....

 
Who was our last pitcher to pitch a complete-game shutout before today?  Roth?

I know they probably gave the answer on the radio, but I was not able to listen to or watch the game.

Wil Crowe was the last to throw a complete game, against Campbell in the 2014 Regional. That game was also a 9-0 win for the Gamecocks: Crowe's gem allowed 4 hits as well, with 4 strikeouts and 0 walks.

Crowe's complete game was the first since the previous season, when Jordan Montgomery threw one for our 2013 Super Regional win against North Carolina in Chapel Hill in Game 2 that forced the deciding Game 3. That was a 8-0 win, and Gumby allowed - again - 4 hits, but only had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

And while that was the first career complete game of Jordan's career, it wasn't even the only complete game of that SEASON - Nolan Belcher pitched a complete-game gem in VERY satisfactory fashion against Clemson earlier in the season, a 8-0 victory in Founders Park that sealed the series win for the Gamecocks. Belcher allowed only 3 hits, with 7 strikeouts and 0 walks.

We used to have quite a number of complete games from our pitchers a few years back. It's surprising that we hadn't had one since 2014 until today.....

 
I'd love to take 4 out of the last 5 games to finish the season really strong heading into the SEC Tourney.  It would be great to get some of that beginning of the season swagger back.
