SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles took 1-of-3 games against Appalachian State to start the 2021 season. Winthrop won, 10-9, with a walk-off single from Jonathan Strauss on Sunday. Joe McNamara had three hits for Winthrop in the win. Strauss led the team with three RBI. On the mound, Dalton Skinner allowed just one hit and struck out four in 4.2 innings of relief.

SERIES VS. WINTHROP
Carolina leads Winthrop, 19-7, in the all-time series and are 15-4 in Columbia. Last year's game was rained out but in 2019, the Gamecocks came away with an 8-6 win on Feb. 19 as Luke Berryhill drove in three runs while TJ Hopkins reached base four times. Parker Coyne struck out six batters in three innings of relief.

CLARKE HAS A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER
Wes Clarke had a weekend to remember to open the 2021 season against Dayton. The junior was 7-for-10 with seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and nine RBI. Clarke had 18 total bases and walked five times for a .800 on-base percentage to go along with his 1.800 slugging percentage. On Friday, he hit a three-run home run in the first inning, giving the Gamecocks the lead for good. He was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, a double and four RBI. Then on Saturday, Clarke was 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI. Clarke was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.

EYSTER OPENS 2021 IN GRAND STYLE
Andrew Eyster had a grand slam in the third inning of Carolina's 12-1 win over Dayton on Opening Day. That grand slam gave the Gamecocks a 7-0 advantage. Eyster had a career high with the four RBI while tying his career high in hits (3) and runs scored (3). The grand slam was the first by a Gamecock since Wes Clarke last February vs. Northwestern.

BOSNIC BREAKS A RECORD IN FIRST CAREER START
Julian Bosnic set a Carolina record with eight consecutive strikeouts in the Sunday win over Dayton (Feb. 21). Bosnic hit the first batter but then struck out eight consecutive Flyers before a walk on a 3-2 count. He broke the record of seven, set by Adam Hill vs. Charleston Southern in 2018 and Alex Farotto vs. Mississippi State in 2007.

UP NEXT
The Gamecocks have their annual three-game series with Clemson this weekend. The series starts Friday, Feb. 26 at Clemson with a 4 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's game will be at Fluor Field in Greenville, also with a 4 p.m. start. Sunday's game is at Founders Park and will start at 1:30 p.m.

Gamecocks in a low-offensive affair with Winthrop. They lead 1-0 in the bottom 3rd, Braylen Wimmer coming up to bat as the lead-off batter. Will Sanders got the start today and pitched a very strong outing, with only two hits allowed and 6 strikeouts - no walks - in 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball. He only pitched 45 pitches into the 3rd inning with two outs before giving way to Magdiel Cotto with a runner on 1B: Cotto induced the batter into a fielder's choice grounder to retire the side. And so it goes......

Wimmer flied out for the first out of the side, and then Mr. Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game National Player of the Week and SEC Co-Player of the Week Wesley Clarke steps up and calmly does Wesley Clarke stuff, and hits a solo home run over the left centerfield wall, to extend the lead to 2-0 Gamecocks! It's Clarke's 4th HR in as many games, so he's on pace to hit 56 home runs this season....

Still bottom 3rd and 2-0 Gamecocks, with 1 out - David Mendham grounds out for the 2nd out, and then Andrew Eyster smashes a solo home run to deep left, and it's 3-0 now! Josiah Singler singles, but Brendan Milone fouls out to 3B to end the inning.

3-0 South Carolina to the top of the 4th......

Cotto struggling now....he gives up consecutive walks, then a single drives in the first run for the Eagles. His day is done as Jack Mahoney comes in to relieve, with 0 outs and Winthrop base-runners on 3B and 1B.

Some serious damage control from Mahoney: he pitches a passed ball to the first batter - the man on 3B scores and the man on 1B moves up to 2B - but he locks in and strikes out that batter, then strikes out the next two batters to sit down the side 1-2-3! Gamecocks lead 3-2 to the bottom 4th.....

3-2 Gamecocks, top 5th:

Mahoney started out right, striking out the first batter for his 4th straight K, and induces the next batter into a ground-out for the 2nd out. Then a single ends the day for Mahoney, and John Gilreath comes in out of the Pen. Gilreath walks his first batter to put them on 2B and 1B, with 2 outs.

On the next batter after that, an attempted fielder's choice was muffed and the base-runner on 2B advances all the way to home to score, the batter on 1B advances to 3B, and we got base-runners on 3B and 2B with 2 outs, and it's 3-3.  Gilreath then intentionally walks the next batter to load the bases, then gets the next Eagles batter to strikeout to end the inning for Winthrop.....

3-3 tie game, bottom 5th....

3-3 tie game, bottom 5th:

Wimmer doubles to lead off. Then Clarke is walked intentionally (smart move), but then Winthrop has issues of their own on turning the fielder's choice off of Mendham's grounder. The 1st baseman throws wide to 2B, and Wimmer scores the go-ahead run. Winthrop goes to their bullpen....

Eyster flies out to right field for the unintended sac. fly, and Clarke advances to 3B to put Gamecocks on the corners, 1 out. Josiah Sightler then SINGLES to drive in Clarke!

After Brennan Milone striked out for the 2nd out, Jeff Heinrich singles in Mendham, and then George Callil grounds into a proper fielder's choice, and the inning comes to an end, but not before the Gamecocks score 3 more runs.

6-3 Gamecocks, top 6th......

7-3 Gamecocks, bottom 6th, 2 outs:

After Clarke's HR, Mendham singled, and Winthrop goes back to their bullpen. After the new pitcher is set, Eyster smashes a double into the right corner, and Mendham scores from 2B. Singler then grounds out to end the inning, but another productive inning for the Gamecocks.

8-3 South Carolina, top 7th.....

8-3 Gamecocks, top 7th:

Jackson Phipps comes in to start the 7th, and he struggles, slipping in one strike out inside of three singles to load the bases. He induces the next Eagle batter to ground out, but a run scores. Now Andrew Peters comes in for Phipps.....

Peters gets the final out on a ground out, and we go to the bottom 7th.....

8-4 Gamecocks....

Crazy crazy crazy. Save some of these for Clemson, please.....

To open the bottom 8th, Wimmer and WESLEY CLARKE AGAIN smack solo home runs. Clarke now has 3 HRs in the game, and 6 HRs on the young season.....

10-4 Gamecocks, bottom 8th......

Now Mendham hits a solo shot....back-to-back-to-back home runs to open the bottom 8th, after a looong at-bat where he fouled off 4-5 straight pitches after working the count full. Don't use up those bats tonight, guys!!

11-4 Yardcocks......

Eyster is next up...he pops up to 2B, most likely trying to get in on the home run derby. But then Singler follows, and HE smashes a home run to right field. Now Winthrop calls to the bullpen. Feel sorry for the Eagles hurler: he faced 5 Gamecocks, and gave up 4 home runs.....

12-4 Yardcocks, bottom 8th, 1 out.....

Top of the 9th, Josiah Singler, off of his 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI effort in the lineup, takes the mound to close out the game. He retires the side on the strike out swinging, fly out to center, and strike out swinging, and the Gamecocks win 12-4 to improve to 4-0 on the season. John Gilreath (1-0) gets the Win.

The player of the game is this past week's national player of the week Wes Clarke, who goes 3-3 with 3 solo home runs, 4 runs, and 3 RBI. Sightler adds his 3-5, 2 RBI 1 HR day, Andrew Eyster went 2-5 with 1 HR (he got in on the HR derby after all) and 2 RBI, Jeff Heinrich went 2-4 with 2 RBI, Braylen Wimmer went 2-4 with 1 HR and 1 RBI, and David Mendham went 2-5 with 1 RBI off his solo HR, and 3 runs.

Overall the Gamecock pitchers allowed 4 runs - only 2 earned - off of 7 hits - all singles - with 17 strikeouts and 5 walks....

Now bring on Clemson.....
