LEXINGTON, Ky.  – Junior Brett Kerry went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing just four hits to pitch the first complete-game shutout for the University of South Carolina baseball team in seven years as the Gamecocks defeated Kentucky, 9-0, Saturday afternoon (May 15) at Kentucky Proud Park. South Carolina and Kentucky close out the three-game series on Sunday afternoon (May 16) with a 1 p.m. first pitch. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. Every Gamecock contest will be on the Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

In Saturday's game, Kerry only needed 94 pitches to earn his fourth win of the season. It also was his first start of 2021.
 
Carolina gave Kerry all the runs he needed in the first on an RBI groundout from Josiah Sightler. Another RBI groundout, this one from David Mendham in the fifth, made it 2-0 Carolina. Andrew Eyster then broke the game open with a grand slam, his second of the season, to make it 6-0. Eyster drove in his fifth run with an infield single in the eighth. Braylen Wimmer ended the scoring with his second home run of the series, a two-run shot in the ninth.
 
Carolina used seven walks and five hit by pitches in its nine runs.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Kerry's complete-game shutout was Carolina's first since Wil Crowe did the trick against Campbell in the 2014 NCAA Columbia Regional.
  • Carolina now has four grand slams this season, two of them from Eyster.
  • The five hit by pitches ties a school record, set several times, the latest against College of Charleston on April 17, 2012.
  • Kerry now has 75 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched this season.

Lots of hitting and offense in this game. The Gamecocks start it off, but not in the 1st inning like the previous two games, but in the 3rd inning.

George Callil led off with a single, then after Brady Allen flied out, Andrew Eyster - the Game 2's big hitter - doubles to score Callil. Then after Wes Clarke flies out for the 2nd out, Josiah Sightler hits a 2-RBI homerun, and the Gamecocks lead 3-0.

Then in the very next inning (4th), Brennan Milone leads off with a single, and after Colin Burgess flies out Callil is hit by a pitch. Allen singles to load the bases with only 1 out. After a new pitcher comes in for the Wildcats, Eyster sacrifice-flies out to score Milone, and then Clarke doubles to score both Allen and Callil.

now it's 6-0 Gamecocks.

After the Wildcats score a run in the bottom 4th to make the score 6-1, in the top 5th the Gamecocks continue: With 1 out, Braylen Wimmer is hit by a pitch, and then steals 2B. Jeff Heinrich reaches 1st safely on a throwing error by the pitcher attempting a fielder's choice at 3B to get Wimmer. Wimmer scores to make the score 7-1 Gamecocks.

7-1 Gamecocks top 6th inning....

 
7-3 Gamecocks top 7th inning:

The Gamecocks score another 3-run inning in the 7th, after Mendham strikes out Wimmer and Heinrich both hit singles. Burgess is hit by a pitch - Kentucky hits an awful lot of opposing batters - to load the bases with 1 out. Callil strikes out for the 2nd out, but Allen singles deep to left to score both Wimmer and Heinrich. After a pitching change for UK, Eyster singles in another run scoring Burgess.

10-3 Gamecocks.

 
10-6 Gamecocks, top 9th inning:

A new pitcher for the Wildcats. Burgess flies out. Callil singles to right field. Allen strikes out, but Callil steals 2B. Eyster singles again, scoring Callil!

Clarke strikes out to end the inning, but another run is scored and driven in by Eyster, his 4th RBI today, and the 9th RBI he's driven in over games 2 and 3! He's hit 7 of 8 in the two games!!

Will Sanders comes in for the 9th. Glad to see he's returning to action.

Will gets the lead-off Wildcat batter to fly out on the very first pitch. Thank you.

The next batter grounds out to 1st who throws to Sanders at 1B for the tag.

The next batter grounds out for the final out to end the game.

The Gamecocks sweep the Kentucky Wildcats with the 11-6 win in Game 3 to improve to 31-18 and 15-12 in SEC play. This was huge because we'll play a very strong Tennessee in our final SEC series next weekend. It will be at Founders Park, so we'll have our chances. But at worst we're guaranteed no worse than a .500 conference schedule in an always very tough conference, and that should ensure post-season play for our team.

 
Thomas Farr (3-5) gets a win on his record for the first time in what seemed like months (it probably was) - he pitched 5.2 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 runs - 2 earned - with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Andrew Eyster is once again the player of the game, going 4 for 5 with a double and driving in 4 runs. For the 3-game series in Lexington, Eyster hit in each game and was 8 for 12 (.667) for the series with 9 RBI and 4 runs scored, hitting a double and a grand slam home run.

Today the team hit 15 for 41 (.366), with a home run and 3 doubles. Brady Allen (2 for 6), Wes Clarke (1 for 5), and Josiah Sightler (2 for 5) drove in 2 runs each.

A very good road trip for the Gamecocks!

 
I checked the game on the radio when were up 6.0 in the 4th then again in the 7th until the end of the game.

I am not sure why you leave Bosnic in long enough to hit everyone on UK but the mascot when you have Sanders at your disposal to finish UK off.

Maybe of couple of our Ps are in Meade's doghouse right now.  It also seemed like our Peters and Bosnic let the ump's very conservative strike zone today get in their heads.

It will be interesting to see what Kingston and Meade do for the pitching rotation against App St with such a short turnaround for the Vols' series at Founders Park this week.

They started Cj Weins against Clemson at Clemson last week. He was doing well until the 3rd inning, then the wheels came off the wagon. He hadn't had many pitching opportunities up to then however, and the pitch count may have been too much for him, even though he only threw around 45 pitches.

Clemson ended up as a pitching by committee, and it wouldn't surprise me if they pitch to App State like that again. I was impressed with Jaret Bennett though - he pitched the final inning and faced 4 Clemson batters, and struck out 3 of them. He's a graduate transfer from Charleston Southern, and while his stats weren't great for his career, he had a 0.71 ERA in 4 starts in 2020 before the season got shut down. He's also pitched a couple of complete game wins, the last one a 2-1 win over Kansas last season. So he's got some experience as a starter. But yeah Bosnic hits a lot of batters: he leads the team with 9 hit batsmen, almost twice as many as the next pitcher Brannon Jordan, who has 5. He and Jordan are similar in that they're a little wild with their plate discipline. Opposing batters don't hit against them very well, but they both anchor it down with a lot of walks and hit batters. But they both are also good at striking out batters too - they just give the bad with the good....

The recent slump has certainly been disappointing, but it's also easy to forget that the season last year was ended before league play started.

So we're seeing the rebuild-year slump that would likely have happened last season instead of this year.  Losing Mahoney only highlights that from the pitching side of things.
