GAMECOCKS IN THE POLLS
The Gamecocks moved up in the polls this week as a result of their win versus Winthrop in the first game last Tuesday, and their two-game sweep of Clemson over the weekend. USA Today Coaches Poll has South Carolina ranked the highest at 12th, up from 20th in their last week's poll. Baseball America ranked South Carolina 13th Monday, up from 16th last week. The NCBWA also moved the Gamecocks up from 16th to 13th. Collegiate Baseball has South Carolina 13th this week as well, up from 20th last week. D1Baseball bumped USC up 3 spots to 14th after having them at 17th last week. And Perfect Game has the Gamecocks ranked 16th this week, after not ranking them in the top 25 previously.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles took 2-of-3 games from Towson this past weekend, including a walk-off, 5-4, win on Sunday. Tyler Baker had the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth. Dillon Morton leads Winthrop with a .409 batting average while Andrew Jenner had 10 hits in seven games. On the mound, Dalton Mims is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.

SERIES VS. WINTHROP
Carolina leads Winthrop, 20-7, in the all-time series and is playing in Rock Hill for the first time since 1999 on Tuesday. The two teams met last Tuesday, with the Gamecocks coming away with a 12-4 win behind three home runs from Wes Clarke. Carolina had seven home runs on the day, most in a game since the 2010 game against the Eagles.

GAMECOCKS SECURE SERIES WIN OVER CLEMSON
For the second time in three seasons, Carolina has won the series over Clemson. This time, after a rain out on Friday night, the Gamecocks had back-to-back walk-off wins over the Tigers on Feb. 27 and 28. Andrew Eyster delivered the walk-off hit in both games of the series. His double in Greenville on Saturday drove in Brady Allen in the bottom of the 11th. He then had a walk-off single in the ninth in Columbia on Sunday. The third game will be played on May 11 in Clemson.

EYSTER SENDS EVERYONE HOME -- TWICE
Andrew Eyster had walk-off hits in back-to-back wins over Clemson on Feb. 27-28. The senior from Ocala, Fla., doubled in the 11th inning in a 3-2 win on Saturday in Greenville. He then had a walk-off single in the ninth inning in the 8-7 win on Sunday in Columbia. Eyster is hitting .455 with five doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBI in eight games played against the Tigers.

CLARKE HAS A START TO REMEMBER
Wes Clarke had a first six games to remember to start the 2021 season. The two-time SEC Co-Player of the Week and National Player of the Week is 14-for-22 with eight home runs, 17 RBI, 40 total bases, 14 runs scored, two doubles and nine walks. Clarke hit two home runs on Feb. 20 against Dayton and had three in the 12-4 win over Winthrop. It was the first time a Gamecock had three home runs in a game since Justin Smoak had three against USC Upstate on April 15, 2008. The junior then had two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the win over Clemson on Feb. 28. Clarke currently leads the nation with eight home runs and leads the SEC in home runs, batting average, RBI, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage and is tied for the lead in hits.

UP NEXT
The Gamecocks host Mercer this weekend (March 5-7) at Founders Park. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games at 4 and noon, respectively.

5-1 Gamecocks, top 3rd inning:

Eyster strikes out, but then Sightler singles, and then Wimmer doubles and it's Gamecocks on 3B and 2B, with only 1 out.

Satterfield hits a 2 RBI single scoring both, and its 7-1 South Carolina!!

Callil lines out. He's struggling mightily with the bat, even in games where the hits are coming easy.

Allen singles to 3rd, and there's men on 2B and 1B with 2 outs for Milone. The Gamecocks have 8 hits already in the 3rd inning. Milone is walked to load the bases again. Wes Clarke pops up for the final out. He's human today.

7-1 USC, bottom 3rd......

7-1 USC, bottom 3rd inning:

Back on the mound, Sightler gets the ground out, ground out, and strikeout to retire the side in order. He's having a superb game all around.

7-1 USC, top 4th......

7-1 USC, top 4th inning:

Mendham starts off with a walk. Winthrop has now walked 5 Gamecocks, to 0 for USC. But then mendham is caught stealing, and Eyster strikes out.

Sightler is then walked as well.

Wimmer reaches safely to 1st on the error from the 3rd baseman who throws the ball into the stands. Wimmer advances all the way to 3B, and Sightler scores!

Satterfield singles into right, and Wimmer scores!!

CALLIL singles! GEORGE CALLIL GETS A HIT!!! It's Yardcocks on 2B and 1B, still 2 outs!

Allen RBI singles to left!!! Satterfield scores!!! Everyone gets a single from Oprah tonight!!!

Finally the Eagles go to the bullpen. Their pitching is struggling this season.

10-1 Gamecocks, top 4th inning, men on 2B and 1B, 2 outs.....

10-1 Gamecocks, top 4th inning, men on 2B and 1B, 2 outs.....

The top of the batting order for the Gamecocks have been by far the strength of the offense during the season, but besides Allen (who is 3-4 with 4 RBIs and a HR), Milone, Clarke, Mendham, and Eyster are 0-7, while Sightler, Wimmer, Satterfield, and CALLIL - YES!! Callil - are a combined 8-11 tonight thus far!

New Winthrop pitcher is warmed up. Milone is walked. That's 7 free passes now. Clarke reaches 1st on ANOTHER WILD THROW FROM THE 3rd BASEMAN!! Milone goes all the way to 3B, Callil and Allen SCORE!

The Gamecocks bat around in the 4th as Mendham comes to the plate. Mendham RBI singles!! Milone scores!

EYSTER HOMERS TO LEFT!! 3 RBI!! A NINE (9) RUN INNING!!

16-1 Gamecocks, top 4th......

16-1 Gamecocks, top 4th, 2 outs......

Sightler singles and then Wimmer mercifully flies out to centerfield. That's 9 runs off of 5 singles, 3 walks, 1 home run, and 2 errors all in the 4th inning.....

only 7 of the 16 Gamecock runs have been earned. There's too many walks (7) and errors (2) in the game for the Eagles.

16-1 Gamecocks, bottom 4th.....

16-1 Gamecocks, bottom 4th inning:

Daniel Lloyd come in to pitch for Sightler - Sightler moves to the DH spot.

A 1-out walk and 2 singles loads the bases for Winthrop. The next Eagle batter hits a RBI sacrifice fly out, and it's 16-2. The next batter then singles driving in the 2nd Winthrop run of the inning, before Lloyd gets the next batter to fly out to end the inning.

16-3 Gamecocks, top 5th inning......

16-3 Gamecocks, top 7th inning:

The 5th and 6th innings pass with 0 hits, and 0 runs. Only 1 more error for Winthrop. The Gamecocks are emptying out their reserves into the lineup: Michael Robinson at SS for Callil, Jalen Vasquez at 2B for Mendham, and Noah Myers in LF for Eyster. Magdiel Cotto relieved for Lloyd, and Parker Coyne relieved for Cotto.

A pop-out, ground-out, and strike-out ends the inning for the Gamecocks. After 14 hits and 16 runs through the first 4 innings, the Gamecocks bats have gone cold.....

16-3 USC, bottom 7th.......

16-3 Gamecocks, bottom 8th inning:

CJ Weins comes in to pitch for Brett Thomas, who had come in for Coyne. He struggles with three walks around one strikeout, and the bases are loaded with 1 out. A wild pitch to the next batter scores a run, and the other base-runners move up to 3B and 2B. That batter eventually grounds out, but it's a sacrifice scoring the Eagle player on 3rd. The next batter strikes out for the final out, but two Winthrop runs score without the benefit of a single safety hit.

16-5 Gamecocks, top 9th......

16-5 Gamecocks, top 9th  inning:

Brandon Fields replaces Allen in right field, Pitcher Jack Mahoney takes over at DH for Sightler, and Connor Cino takes over at catcher for Clarke....

Things are getting wild now from the pitching mound, for both clubs. Myers and Mahoney both reach base via hit by pitches. They then both move up to 3B and 2B on a wild pitch to Wimmer. Wimmer then strikes out for the 1st out. Satterfield flies out on a sacrifice fly, scoring Myers.

Robinson is walked. Fields reaches 1st safely on another error from the Eagles 3B-man - the 3rd error of the game from that position. The bases are loaded with 2 outs.

Milone doubles scoring Mahoney and Robinson scores! Cino then strikes out for the final out, but 3 runs score!

19-5 USC, bottom 9th......

19-5 Gamecocks, bottom 9th inning:

Cam Tringali comes in for Weins. Its the first appearance of the season for the junior veteran. He hits the lead-off batter, who then steals 2B. Tringali then strikes out the next Eagles batter, but hits the next Batter. Then a wild pitch to the 4th Winthrop batter advances both base-runners to 3B and 2B. Then that 4th batter doubles driving both runners in to score.

Travis Luensmann then comes in for Tringali. He gets a ground-out from the first batter he faces, for the 2nd out, the Winthrop base-runner advancing to 3B on the play. Then Luensmann balks to advance that guy in to score, before striking out the batter to end the inning, and the game.

The Gamecocks improve to 7-0 on the season by defeating Winthrop 19-8 on 16 hits - 16 runs and 14 hits recorded through the first 4 innings. Sightler gets the win (1-0) pitching 3.0 innings with 3 hits, 1 run (earned), and 4 Ks with 0 walks. Joe Satterfield was the top line-up man today going 3-5 with 2 runs and 5 RBI. Brady Allen went 3-4 with 2 runs, 1 HR, and 4 RBI. Josiah Sightler pulled double duty tonight, also going 3-3 in the lineup, with 3 runs scored. Andrew Eyster only went 1-4 but made his lone hit count as a 3-RBI HR - he also scored 2 runs. Brennan Milone also went 1-4 with 2 RBI, and David Mendham went 1-4 with 1 RBI. Braylen Wimmer went 2-6 with 3 runs scored....

Lots of offense all around for the Gamecocks. Gorilla Ball is Back!!!

Ok, this bit of descriptive liberty deserves some recognition.  Well played, Conway.

I started listening to it on the radio in the 7th but hit the rack right before the bullpen got sideways in the 8th and 9th.

Great hitting for us, but a starting pitcher that only goes for 3 innings and a bullpen that gives up 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings is a prescription for a loss in SEC play if the hits don't materialize.

It's even worse when considering we didn't have to play the first game with Clemson in the series before this game.

Early season rust I guess for the bullpen, but I am still not sold on Meade as a pitching coach.

Yep I was surprised when they pulled Sightler so early, but he was also playing in the lineup as DH (Clarke was the catcher last night), and was having a strong game at the plate as well (he hit 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored), so perhaps he was getting a bit tired?? Not sure - the Winthrop score-keepers didn't bother with pesky nuisance things like pitch counts in tallying up the box score, so I couldn't tell if Sightler was laboring on the mound with heavy pitches or not, but his stats show a strong effort - only 3 hits in 3 innings - two of them came in the 1st inning, scoring their only run off of him - and 4 Ks with 0 walks.

My best bet was because we scored so many runs in the first half of the game, and Winthrop looked so totally overwhelmed, that Coach Kingston decided to let some of the bullpen arms that hadn't gotten much mound time to get in some pitches. I think Coyne, Thomas, Weins, and Tringali all got their first appearances on the season last night. I had almost forgotten that Tringali was still on the roster. So there's probably a lot about the rustiness you mentioned regarding them - that and plus relievers and subs in games that were blowouts typically tend to lose focus and go through motions, which can result in late inning "comebacks".

The last two innings definitely hurt our team ERA, but a lot of little-used guys got good pitches in, and that should help us later on during the SEC slate....

The biggest concern I have is with Jordan - he's the typical "no 3rd strike pitch guy" who has to take his batters to full counts every at-bat. That's the type pitcher that rarely makes it to the 5th and 6th innings, and taxes the bullpen. Hopefully Coach Meade fixes his location issues, as I don't recall him being like that last year.....
