GAME 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team opened its three-game series with Mercer with a 5-1 win Friday night (March 5) at Founders Park.

Each team had six hits on the night, but the Gamecocks had three of the extra-base variety, including a two-run home run from Braylen Wimmer in the fourth, his fourth of the season. Mercer answered with a run in the fourth, but Carolina responded with two in the fifth on an RBI single by Andrew Eyster and a bases loaded hit by pitch to Colin Burgess.

The scoring ended in the seventh as David Mendham drove in Wes Clarke with a sacrifice fly to center.

Thomas Farr picked up the win for the Gamecocks, striking out five and allowing six hits and a run with three walks in 5.1 innings pitched. Andrew Peters came on and did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings of relief, striking out five. Jack Mahoney pitched a perfect ninth as the Gamecocks moved to 8-0 on the year.

Eyster had two hits to lead the Carolina offense, while Clarke scored two runs and Wimmer drove in a pair.

Carolina and Mercer continue its three-game set on Saturday (March 6) at 4 p.m. at Founders Park. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Carolina moves to 8-0 on the year for the first time since the 2016 season.
  • Andrew Peters now has 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work. He has allowed just one hit and walked one in 2021.
  • Wes Clarke reached base three times in Friday's game with a single and two walks. His on-base percentage is now at .700.
  • Andrew Eyster now has a hit in six straight games.

0-0 Bottom 1st inning:

Brady Allen strikes out, but Josiah Sightler HITS A SOLO HOME RUN to get things rolling!

Wes Clarke then grounds out - he's gone a bit cold with his hitting lately - but then the Mercer pitcher walks three straight batters in David Mendham, Andrew Eyster, and Braylen Wimmer to load the bases.

Joe Satterfield DOUBLES DOWN THE RIGHT LINE to score Mendham and Eyster!

Brandon Fields works the count full but strikes out looking to end the inning, but the Gamecocks do damage.

The Mercer pitcher has 44 pitches in just one inning of work.

3-0 South Carolina, top 2nd.....

3-0 Gamecocks, top 4th inning:

Brannon Jordan is pitching much better in his 3rd start of the season. He's still getting into full counts, but nowhere near like he was in his previous appearances. He has 9 Ks now in 4 innings after striking out the side in order 1-2-3 here in the 4th. He still now has thrown 65 pitches through 4 innings, but he's now in line to actually get a win decision, as long as the score stays - he should get well past 5.0 innings, and even has a chance to get to the 7th inning possibly...

3-0 Gamecocks, bottom 4th.....

3-0 South Carolina, top 5th inning:

I may have jinxed Jordan here, or perhaps it was just fated as he got into later innings. But he started to waver just a bit in the 5th, walking the first two Mercer batters. He strikes out the next batter, but the next after that was Mercer's top batter in the lineup - the only hitter with a .400+ BA. But Jordan induces the hitter to hit into a fielder's choice, and there's now 2 outs with Bears on 3B and 1B.

Still a dangerous time as the next batter is the potential tying run for Mercer, with the top of their lineup coming up. But Jordan gets him to strike out to end the inning! Jordan now has 3 walks, but also 11 Ks on the day! He's thrown 93 pitches in 5.0 innings - they may let him come back out and take it batter by batter, or perhaps not. He's in line for the decision either way.....

3-0 USC, top 6th inning:

Jackson Phipps comes in for Jordan, so his day is done. Still a very solid outing for Brannon, and he's in line for the win.

Phipps gives up one single around three fly outs and the inning is retired.

3-0 USC, bottom 6th inning:

Wimmer is walked, and Mercer finally brings in a reliever out of their bullpen for their starter - he threw 110 pitches today.

Wimmer steals 2B during the at-bat of Satterfield, but Satterfield ultimately strikes out.

Then Fields and Callil strikes out as well. Brandon Fields has 3 strikeouts in his 3 at-bats. I guess he's not ready yet.

3-0 Gamecocks, top 7th......

3-0 Yardcocks, top 7th inning:

Will Sanders comes in for Phipps. Noah Myers comes in at CF for Fields, and Michael Robinson at 3B for Satterfield.

Sanders gets the lead-off Bear batter to strike out, and the next to ground out. The next batter also grounds out for the final out, and it's 7th inning stretch time!!!

3-0 Yardcocks, bottom 7th......

3-0 Gamecocks, bottom 7th inning:

All stretched out, the Gamecocks choose their bats. Allen leads off with a single, and then after Sightler lines out to center, Clarke singles as well, and the Mercer Bears go to the bullpen.

Mendham is the first Gamecock batter to welcome the new Mercer reliever. Mendham DOUBLES IN ALLEN ACROSS THE PLATE! Not amused, Mercer goes back to the bullpen.

The even newer Mercer reliever intentionally walks Wimmer between strikeouts of Eyster and Robinson to end the inning.

4-0 South Carolina, top 8th........

4-0 South Carolina, bottom 8th inning:

Nothing doing for the Gamecocks - Myers grounds out, Callil strikes out, and Allen pops out.

4-0 South Carolina, top 9th inning:

Brett Kerry comes in to close the game for Sanders.

The lead-off Mercer Bears batter strikes out looking. Out #1.

Bears batter #2 singles.

Bear batter #3 strikes out swinging. Out #2.

Bear batter #4 strikes out swinging! Out #3!

The Gamecocks win the 2nd Game versus the Mercer Bears 4-0 to take the series 2 games out of 2 played, to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Brannon Jordan (1-0) gets his first win on the season. Joe Satterfield is the top hitter of the game going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs driven in off a double, in the low hitting, low scoring game.
