GAMECOCKS IN THE SEC TOURNAMENT

  • The Gamecocks are 24-24 all-time in SEC Tournament action, including a 21-7 mark under head coach Dawn Staley.
  • The 2020 SEC Tournament champion, South Carolina has won five of the last six tournament titles and is the only team in league history to win four consecutive titles at the event (2015-18).
  • Under Staley, the Gamecocks are 5-2 in SEC Tournament semifinal games.
  • South Carolina is 7-2 in SEC Tournament games played in Greenville and won two of their five titles in Bon Secours Wellness Arena (2017, 2020).
  • The Gamecocks are 4-2 all-time when playing the tournament as the No. 2 seed, including three wins en route to the 2018 title. They were also seeded second in 2002 and 2019.
  • South Carolina is 2-3 against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament, but the Gamecocks have won the last two meetings at the event – 2015 Championship Game (62-46), 2018 Quarterfinals (73-62).
GAMECOCK NOTABLES

  • While the Lady Vols claimed the regular-season meeting between the two teams, South Carolina has won three of the last four outings against Tennessee and each of the last two SEC Tournament matchups.
  • Friday night against Alabama, South Carolina turned nine offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points. On the season, the Gamecocks, who rank fifth in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (16.7), average 1.03 points per offensive rebound while limiting opponents to just .83 points per offensive rebound.
  • The Gamecocks' ball movement Friday night helped their field goal percentage skyrocket. South Carolina shot 48.4 percent from the field with 14 assists, their highest numbers in both areas since shooting 49.2 percent with 15 assists at Auburn on Feb. 4.
  • Junior point guard Destanni Henderson continues to thrive in the SEC Tournament, following up her 2020 All-Tournament selection with 18 points and five assists Friday night. Over the last two tournament, Henderson is averaging 14.3 point and 4.8 assists, shooting 54.8 percent (23-40) from the field
  • Aliyah Boston's rebounding dominance in the SEC Tournament as she is pulling in 11.8 rebounds per career game at the event, in addition to shooting 52.9 percent from the field (18-34). Boston has two double-doubles in four career SEC Tournament games.
  • Sophomore guard Zia Cooke has a team-high five 20-point games this season, including in two of her last four outings to average 18.9 points in that stretch. Her game-high 22 points against Alabama Friday night marked her first 20-point game in an SEC Tournament.
  • In just her sophomore season, Aliyah Boston already ranks 10th on the SEC active career rebounding list (592) and fourth on the blocks list (154). Her block total ranks sixth in Gamecock history, and her 68 blocks this season are eight in the program's single-season record book. Boston's 26 career double-doubles are 10th in school history, and with 16 of them coming in SEC regular-season play, she is third in program history, trailing just Alaina Coates (27) and A'ja Wilson (21).
  • Destanni Henderson's three 3-pointers Friday night against Alabama was her fifth such game this season and her second 3-of-3 outside shooting night of 2020-21. She is the team's most accurate 3-point shooter at 44.3 percent.

First chance the team has to revenge one of its four losses on the season, and one of its two SEC losses. The Vols played a very tough battle late last night against Ole Miss - they trailed through the first 3 quarters of play until dominating the 4th Qtr. to pull away. South Carolina meanwhile dominated in it's 1st Qtr. of its quarterfinal game against Alabama, only to be out-scored in each of the next three quarters, but was able to hang on for the win thanks to that 1st Qtr. effort. Hopefully the guards Henderson and Cooke continue to play well, but they will be going up against a very tall team in Tennessee where both of its guards are 6.0+....

High tempo full court offense that creates gaps is the only way to overcome size mismatches.

The girls seem to settle for jumpers like Frank's guys this year, but the difference is they make theirs. LOL

- - - SEC Tournament Breaking News - - -

In today's first semifinal, the #1 Seed Texas A&M lost to #4 Seed Georgia 74-68. The Aggies only had one loss on the season coming into the tournament, and that was to LSU, but they've also had several close wins all season long as well. Perhaps this was one that crept up and bit them, but UGA played a solid game. So the Gamecocks and Lady Vols are playing for the right to face off against the Bulldogs for the SECT title.

Will it be the Vols versus the Bulldogs????

Gamecocks storm out to a very strong first quarter, leading Tennessee 29-13 after one period of play. The Lady Vols were plagued with fouls and turnovers, and South Carolina is already in the bonus going 9-10 at the free throw line, including 3-3 from Zia Cooke on a fouled 3-pt attempt. Cooke and Aliyah Boston lead the team with 8 points each.

Now, PLEASE keep up the momentum, girls!! Too many times you had strong quarters only to follow them up with poor quarters to level things out. Lets not do that today, OK????

Well, the Gamecocks went stone cold in the 2nd Period. Only 3-14 from the field. Good thing was 2 of those 3 were 3-ptrs. Also good was Tennessee went ice cold as well towards the end of the quarter - They ended up shooting 4-16 themselves. That kept the Vols from overtaking us too much, but they still out-scored us 12-10 in the quarter.

Gamecocks still lead 39-25 at the halftime.....

Hopefully this won't be a repeat of yesterday's game against Alabama, where we have the strong opening quarter and then get out-scored in each subsequent quarter just to hang on in the end. We're already on pace to do that again. We need to have a strong 3rd quarter.....

Game getting a bit chippy - UT's Rennia Davis and our Zia Cooke pick up technicals for getting mouthy with each other. Davis' technical is her 4th foul - Zia only has 2 fouls - so that was the worst deal for Tenn. But USC is a bit scatter-brained right now with all the emotions on the floor. Still lead 62-45 just under 6 minutes to play.....

The girls grew an inch or two tonight.

I don't think burning the clock comes natural to them, either.  LOL

Having real fans making noise certainly helped them in the second half once they got going.

The #2 Seed South Carolina Gamecocks win a physical and at times emotional rematch against the #3 Seed Tennessee Lady Vols 67-52, to advance to the SEC Championship Game for the 6th time in seven seasons. The Gamecocks (21-4, 14-2) will face #4 Seed Georgia tomorrow at 2:00 PM.

The Gamecocks were led by Zia Cooke with 17 pts and 4 rebounds, by Aliyah Boston with 15 pts - including 2-2 from the 3-pt. line - 11 rebounds and 2 blocks, and by Destanni Henderson with 13 pts, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

We were so dominating last year, I didn't watch many of the regular season games.

I picked it back up at the SECT and then the NCAAT got canceled.

Making up for lost time now.  Gonna be some great Gamecock WBB from here on out.

Gotta beat them Dawgs tomorrow afternoon.

Girls looked very focus tonight, for the most part.  Hope they can keep it the rest of the way out.

Yeah, I think we actually had a home court advantage for the first time because the SECT is in Greenville and there were real fans instead of cardboard cut-outs this time around.

USC vs. UGA is always going to draw a crowd, too.

Should be a great game today.

Two non-starters deserve props. LeLe and Laeticia were used to give us a big line-up. UT plays three guards bit they are all really big - 6'1 or 6' 2". Using LeLe (6'2") and Laeticia (6'3") to guard them was a great move - they could not shoot over them. Laeticia, in particular, did a great job on D.
Yeah I think this was one of the biggest differences in this game. Props to Dawn for making the move. Most of their playmakers never got into a rhythm. We are nasty on defense when we are fired up! It was a good game and gives me hope for the rest of the season.

For most of the game I was screaming in my head "Show me that mad Kiki!" and when Zia got the technical foul I was actually elated. I got up out of my chair and cheered. We really need that fighting spirit and some fire to keep the foot on the gas. It wasn't perfect, but I felt it last night. Sometimes I don't think our ladies have that dog mentality where they get aggressive when they feel they've been dissed. Like when an opponent makes a run or jukes you out of your shoes, we don't try to exact our revenge. If anything, we get more timid. It felt different last night and I think was all because Destanni and Zia brought that swagger.

"Mad-dawg" was the nickname that popped up in my head when Zia got T'd up.
