Back in June of this year, Women's head coach Dawn Staley tweeted out a "another birdie has landed in the nest!" tweet, which is her way of letting Gamecock Nation know that she's gotten another commitment. Then, no public announcement followed, which left folks wondering who it may be.
In late October, Staley let out another such tweet. Then highly rated PG Talaysia Cooper committed. But still, nothing regarding that June tweet. Several online sources (and many, many Gamecock faithful) began speculating that it could be Columbia's own Ashlyn Watkins, another highly rated prospect for the 2022 cycle. Well, now we know:
Watkins, 6-3 out of Columbia, S.C., is the overall #12 rated prospect for the ESPN Hoopgurlz' 2022 class, and the #4 Post. She's played for Cardinal Newman. This past season (20-21) as a Junior, Watkins averaged 16.2 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 2.8 spg, and 2.7 bpg. In fact, going back to her eighth grade totaling 94 games, she's averaged 15.2 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 2.7 spg, and 3.4 bpg. She's a model of consistency.
Watkins joins Fellow South Carolinian Talaysia Cooper for the 2022 class. Cooper has already signed - the early signing period ends today, and apparently Watkins signed as well as committed.
