USC Wednesday afternoon landed one of the state’s top two way prospects in 3 star DB/WR Bryce Thompson 6'0" 180lbs of Dutch Fork. Thompson, who is with the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team, made his announcement via a video he released on Twitter just a few minutes after telling a reporter following practice his decision was imminent. He said he will not sign until February.
Thompson said regarding which position he will play in college, he could see himself on either said of the ball.
“I honestly think I can play both positions at the highest level,” Thompson said. “I’ll just ask the coaches what they want and I’ll just do whatever they ask me to do. I have more experience at wide receiver but I feel like I’m natural at corner.”
Thompson said the message he got from USC was, “I’d be a great DB then I hear some of the people say I’d be a good slot receiver and all that stuff.”
Thompson said he completed his academic work last week with his virtual school classes, passing all of them, and his school has given him the go ahead to move toward college.
Thompson also had Marshall, Virginia Tech, Temple and Georgia State on his short list. He took his official visit to USC last weekend.
This season Thompson rushed for 1368 yards and caught 44 passes for 630 yards. He totaled 38 touchdowns. On defense he recorded 27 tackles with 1 interception.
Thompson is the Gamecocks’ 20th commitment for the 2018 class which actually has 22 spots accounted for with two players counting back. That leaves USC with three spots to fill out the 25 man initial signee list.
