South Carolina's wave of commitments continued Saturday afternoon when Abbeville (S.C.) class of 2020 three-star OL Trai Jones 6'3" 270lbs committed to the Gamecocks.
Jones has seen his stock rise in recent months. Jones has a handful of offers, but that list will grow in the coming months. Jones is built like a defensive lineman with great strength and he showed the ability to move his feet too. He projects as a guard or center on the next level."
After watching Jones blaze thru a 40-yard dash, and excel in some other drills, Muschamp moved as fast as the big man did with an offer. And Jones responded by becoming the Gamecocks’ fifth commitment of the weekend, the fourth that’s gone public.
“Today I did pretty good at camp, had a nice 40 time (4.69) , nice shuttle time, and it grew from there,” Jones said. “Coach (Eric) Wolford and I have known each other since last summer and he kind of likes me. Coach Muschamp didn’t know me all that well and he came running over there to me. We went to his office and my parents came. He said I had a great day and he said I’m exactly what he needs for the team to get better. It’s my dream school ever since I was a little boy. At first I didn’t say anything. I talked to my parents. My family are all die-hard Gamecock fans. I still can’t believe it. I believe it’s fate.”
Jones’ high school coach, Abbeville’s Jamie Nickles, wasn’t surprised to hear of the lineman’s impressive 40 time, “He’s such an explosive young man, from an athletic standpoint. And Trai is really strong. We run the outside zone so much, and he really seals the edge. He’s young for his grade, and I think the upside is what Carolina saw.”
Jones is the fourth public commitment of the weekend for South Carolina joining class of 2020 pledges CB O'Donnell Fortune, DT Makius Scott and DT Alex Huntley. Jones committed to South Carolina over offers from Appalachian State, Army, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Connecticut, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Furman, Georgia State, Navy, The Citadel and Western Carolina.
Jones is the 12th commitment to Carolina's class.
