Cam Smith
USC added its second public commitment from a cornerback in as many days Friday night when 4 star DB Cam Smith 6'1" 178lbs of Westwood revealed his decision to join the Gamecocks.  He had actually committed to Will Muschamp the end of July but waited until after his team’s game to make that public.

Thursday Muschamp landed cornerback DJ Daniel from Georgia Military JC, so that gives the Gamecocks a pair of cornerbacks among the 21 players who now count in the 2019 class.

Smith did not draw heavy recruiting attention until the summer when he showed off his skills in camps.  USC’s Will Muschamp offered after seeing him up close in June.  He camped the next week at Georgia and picked up an offer from Kirby Smart.  He also took an unofficial visit to Tennessee.  Smith’s reputation grew to the point he was invited to the Rivals Five Star Challenge and to The Opening this summer.

Smith said a few factors stood out about USC that led to his commitment.

“The atmosphere and the fans and the new facilities,” he said.  “I made sure there wasn’t a lot of depth above me so I could come in and try and play as a freshman.”

Smith also likes the direction Muschamp is taking the Gamecocks at this point.

“A great, building program. Right now they are rebuilding. They keep everybody in state like they had a couple of years ago,” he said.

Despite the commitment, Smith has said he does plan to take official visits to Georgia and Tennessee during the season.  He plans to sign in December and graduate early.

Last season, playing in  Fort Meade, MD, Smith had 61 tackles and 3 interceptions.
