4-star pass rusher DE Myles Murphy’s has Gamecocks atop his list

April 17, 2019

Take a gander at Myles Murphy’s timeline, and things don’t look bad for South Carolina football.

The four-star defensive end is set to be back on campus in less than two weeks. A month later, he’ll be back on campus for his official visit.

Oh, and he’ll make his decision in June.

On Tuesday, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder watched his new teammate, wide receiver Mike Wyman, announce a long-silent pledge to the Gamecocks. Afterward, he said South Carolina leads a list that includes Alabama, LSU and UNC.

USC was among his first offers, and he’s built a bond with some of the coaches in Columbia.

“I talked to coach (John) Scott a lot and (Will) Muschamp,” Murphy said. “Me and coach Muschamp, we talk every day. He’s just telling me about academics, if I don’t make it to the league, they can make sure I graduate, do all that good stuff I wanted to do.”

Murphy is the No. 177 player in the country in the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s 10th among strongside defensive ends and ninth among players in North Carolina.

He recently transferred from Southwest Guilford High School to join Wyman at Dudley. He’s moving from an 8-4 team to one that went 10-4 last season.

As a junior, he posted 53 tackles, 18 for loss, and 10 sacks on a defense that allowed 12.6 points per game.

He said the Gamecocks are recruiting him as an end and outside linebacker, so likely the hybrid Buck position where they tend to put top pass rushers.

What transpires over the next couple months could impact the Gamecocks’ position, but for the moment, the blue chipper likes Muschamp, has a teammate already in the fold and has a very high opinion of the program putting on a full-court press.

“I love South Carolina,” Murphy said.

Visiting SC with his teammate Mike Wyman this weekend. He is waiting until June to make an announcement.

My understanding is that Murphy ended up not coming down with Wyman, although Wyman did come. Not sure what happened, but hopefully if he is still high on us, that we'll be able to re-schedule, and even perhaps put more one-on-one attention on him from the staff once he does come down...
